Anchor is a free, beginner-friendly platform for podcast creation, containing tools that allow users to record and edit audio, arrange it into podcast episodes, publish podcasts to listening platforms, and monetize content by collecting listener contributions or adding advertisements into episodes.[1][2][3][4] The recordings need not be professionally produced or edited and no expensive equipment is required. Beginners often start out using nothing more than their smartphones. The app includes a library to store user recordings, royalty-free music, as well as sound effects available to all users.[5] It also features a function to import podcast from other platforms[6]

Anchor can be used on iOS, Android, iPad and web browsers.[7]

Background

Anchor was founded in 2015 by Michael Mignano and Nir Zicherman.[8] The company first launched as a social audio service geared for short-form content. In February 2018, Anchor launched an updated version of the platform specifically for creating and publishing podcasts.[9]

In February 2019, Anchor was acquired by Spotify and operates as a subdivision of the streaming company.[8][10]
