BackRub was an early search engine created in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergei Brin. Considered the Google predecessor, BackRub analysed the quality of website links and ranked them accordingly.[1]
Larry Page was the original creator of the BackRub project.[2] He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Engineering. A year later he started building the search engine.[2] Page quickly brought Sergei Brin on board as a partner.[3] BackRub was written in Java and Python and run on several Sun Ultras and Intel Pentiums running Linux.[4]
Growth and evolution
The name "BackRub" was chosen because the search engine depended on the analysis of back links. Initially operating on Stanford University servers, BackRub grew too large.[5] The project grew more ambitious, and started being referred as "google",[6] a term deriving from the mathematical term googol, which means the numeral 1 followed by a hundred zeroes.[1] Page and Brin unsuccessfully offered BackRub to potential suitors, including Excite, Alta Vista and Infoseek, all showing no interest.[5] BackRub eventually evolved into what is Google, whose domain was registered on 15 September 1997.[7]
