Within Apple products, Configuration Profiles are files that contain data used to automatically load settings and authorization information onto a device.[1] A configuration profile is an XML file with the mobileconfig
file extension. Configuration Profiles can be created manually or by using software such as Apple Configurator.[2]
Configuration Profiles can be installed by downloading them in Safari or by transferring them to an Apple device by other means. Once downloaded, the receiver will be prompted to go to the Settings app to authenticate with their passcode and finalize the installation.[3] Configuration profiles can be signed and encrypted using Cryptographic Message Syntax.
Configuration profiles are able to configure a variety of "payloads." Payloads are used to change various settings and enable or disable features of a device, such as the camera.[4] Some payloads are only available on "supervised" devices. Supervised devices are devices that have been specially configured at setup to be more strictly controlled. Configuration Profiles on supervised devices can be made to require authentication to be uninstalled, or unable to be installed at all.[5] Configuration Profiles on supervised devices can enforce policies such as force installing apps and stricter passcode requirements.[4]
