Epicflow is an AI-powered software solution for multi-project resource and portfolio management. Inspired by Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM) principles,[1][2] its functionality serves to address the complexity and uncertainty of multi-project management and deliver more projects with the same resources.[3] This becomes possible thanks to prioritization, resource allocation across the entire multi-project environment, and opportunities for bottleneck visualization and mitigation.[4]
The development of Epicflow has been subsidized by the Dutch government for AI research in project management, which gave an impulse to creating and implementing AI-powered features into its functional architecture.
History
Epicflow’s origins date back to 2006,[5] when Dutch researchers and certified Theory of Constraints (TOC) experts Jan Willem Tromp[6] and Dr. Ir. Albert Ponsteen[7] founded GLOW-Management BV in Amsterdam. The company focused on managing resources in complex multi-project environments.
Their consulting experience revealed that traditional project management methods, including TOC, were insufficient for handling multiple concurrent projects sharing limited resources. They combined their expertise, field research, and theory to create a unique methodology, which became the foundation of Epicflow.
In 2022, Epicflow received JOSCAR accreditation (Joint Supply Chain Accreditation Register), which has made it suitable for companies in the Aerospace, Defence, Security & Space sectors. The same year, Epicflow underwent penetration testing to the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) standards: it can now provide services to all suppliers affiliated with the UK MOD. After pen-testing and JOSCAR approval, one department of a large defence company started to use Epicflow to optimize resource utilization and project delivery.
In 2023, Epiclow released AI-powered virtual assistant Epica, whose mission is to simplify interaction with the tool and support multi-project and resource management. In the same year, Epicflow was showcased at the NIDV Defence and Security Exhibition.[3]
In 2024, Epicflow partnered with a large defence program run by the Dutch Ministry of Defence. They conducted an experiment, which is still underway, to test how Epicflow can help them optimize resource management and increase portfolio performance.
