Hypixel is a Minecraft mini-game server, founded on April 14, 2013, by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette, from Hypixel Inc.. (As of December 2018), the server has had a total of 14 million unique logins. It runs on the Java Edition of Minecraft.[1]

History

Hypixel was founded on April 14, 2013, by Simon Collins-Laflamme and Philippe Touchette.[2][3][4] The two originally created Minecraft adventure maps and uploaded them to their YouTube channel. Their maps gained popularity in the Minecraft community. It was around this time when Hypixel released what originally was their largest project to date, the Hypixel Network. Minigames made for the server soon gained popularity and became the focus, and efforts from Hypixel were put towards new server content instead of classic Minecraft Maps.[5] On December 21, 2016, Hypixel reached 10 million unique players in total,[6] and reached 14 million on December 13, 2018.[7] Hypixel attracts around 2 million players each month.[2]

Around April 2018, Hypixel started to use Cloudflare Spectrum as a DDoS protection after being the victim of attacks hosted by Mirai against the server.[8][9]

Hytale

On December 13, 2018, a stand-alone game named Hytale was announced to be in development by Hypixel Studios, a newly-founded company by the creators of Hypixel,[7][10][11][12] with support from Riot Games and other developers including Dennis Fong, Rob Pardo and Peter Levine.[7] Development for Hytale started in 2015.[11] The trailer for Hytale was released on December 13, 2018, and amassed over 30 million views within a month.[13][14]
