i-Ready (also spelt iReady) is an online educational platform developed by Curriculum Associates. Founded in 2011, it provides tools for diagnostic assessments and personalized instruction in both reading and mathematics.
History
i-Ready was created in 2011 by Curriculum Associates, who say its goal is to "make high-quality learning a reality for all students."[1] Curriculum Associates was founded in 1969 and previously produced printed educational materials such as workbooks.[2] Its headquarters is located in North Billerica, Massachusetts.[3] i-Ready originally ran on Flash, but was later moved to HTML, due to security concerns. As of 2026, i-Ready is used by almost 14 million students, including nearly a third of K–12 students in the United States.[4][5]
i-Ready Inform
i-Ready Inform, formerly called i-Ready Diagnostic, is an adaptive assessment that adjusts its questions based on the responses of students.[6][7]
According to Curriculum Associates, the i-Ready Inform test is designed to help educators by providing meaningful data about the instructional needs of their students and connecting them to i-Ready math and reading instruction that is proven to raise student achievement.[1]
Personalized Instruction
The platform provides two primary subject areas: reading comprehension and mathematics. Upon selecting a subject, users are directed to a set of available lessons. Each completed lesson awards 20 points, and once a total of 50 points is accumulated, users are granted access to a game.
In addition to instructional content, the platform offers several customization features. Users may modify the interface background and select a “buddy,” a character that delivers feedback on lesson performance and offers encouragement. A statistics section is also available, enabling users to review lesson scores and track the amount of time spent using the program. Furthermore, the platform includes access to a Family Center, which provides additional information and resources.
Lesson formats may differ in structure and presentation. In one format, an advanced control bar is provided, allowing users to adjust audio settings, pause, rewind, and fast-forward through previously completed sections. This format may also include tools such as a notepad, calculator, dictionary, and pen, when applicable. In another format, lessons feature various characters but do not include the control bar.
i-Ready also includes a set of simple educational games to teach students mathematical concepts.[8]
Platforms
i-Ready is available on web browsers and an iPad app.[9]
Reception
i-Ready has received significant criticism from students, parents, and educators. Complaints about the platform include long and unengaging lessons, a lack of transparency around scoring, and being stressful for students.[5][10] There are also concerns about i-Ready's limited availability on mobile devices, making it difficult for some students to use at home, as well as its contribution to children's screen time.[11]
Studies
In a study by the Johns Hopkins School of Education, students who did the i-Ready personalized lessons had a higher test score on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), scoring an average of 5-8 points higher than students who only did the diagnostic. Additionally, students who completed the usage guidelines for 18 weeks and passed over 70% of lessons had 6-17 point gains compared to other students.[12]
This study was conducted in partnership with Curriculum Associates. From the executive summary:
In July 2021, The Center for Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) at Johns Hopkins University contracted with Curriculum Associates (CA) to conduct a quantitative efficacy study of the effects of i-Ready Personalized Instruction on student achievement in five Massachusetts school districts.
In another study by Georgia State University's Georgia Policy Lab, during the COVID-19 pandemic, showed that students that used it increased their growth on standardized tests more than those who did not.[13]
Lawsuit
On April 6, 2026, a lawsuit was filed against Curriculum Associates and i-Ready by Nick Petrossi, with the help of Andy Liddel.[14] The lawsuit alleged sharing student data with other companies and monetizing off of that student data and information without the consent of a legal parent/guardian.[15] The lawsuit also claims that student information is used to build psychological profiles of students for predictions of future student behavior.
