Xevious[lower-alpha 1] is a Japanese vertical-scrolling shooter video game franchise originally developed by Namco and currently owned by their successor company, Bandai Namco Entertainment. The series debuted in arcades with Xevious in 1983, receiving several ports and sequel games for a number of platforms, the latest being the 2009 PlayStation 3 game Xevious Resurrection, bundled with the arcade compilation Namco Museum Essentials.[1] The series has the player controlling the "Solvalou", a starship that must destroy the Xevious forces, controlled by the supercomputer GAMP. The Solvalou has two weapons, used to combat enemies stationed on the ground and flying through the air.
The original game was developed by Masanobu Endo, who would later create the Babylonian Castle Saga series.[2] The first game in the series was created out of response to Konami's Scramble (1981);[2] early prototypes of the game had the player controlling a helicopter admit the Vietnam War, the title originally known as Cheyenne,[3] however a science fiction theme was soon applied following changes in staff.[3] Although Endo disapproved of sequels to the game, the success prompted Namco to produce followup titles for arcades and home consoles, alongside ports and digital releases.[3]
Xevious was a critical and commercial success in Japan, given several awards and cited as one of the most influential shoot-em-up video games ever created.[4][4] International releases of the game proved to be less of a commercial success, although would still sell a reasonable number of units.[5] The original game would spawn the first video game soundtrack album and gameplay recording,[6] alongside literature, merchandise, and an animated feature film.[7] Several Xevious games would be included in numerous Namco video game compilations, alongside releases on digital storefronts such as Xbox Live Arcade.
