Reface is an AI app that can swap faces in a video and GIFs in a few seconds.[2] It held first place in the top of the American Apple AppStore soon after release.[3][4][5] The company's head office is located in Kyiv, Ukraine .[6]

Description

Reface has created a universal neural network to replace all possible human faces. The neural network has trained on millions of images that are freely available. The technology of the application can change the features of a face, which is transformed into so-called face-embeddings. It is an anonymous set of numbers that describes the features of a person's face that distinguish him from other people. To achieve image realism, Reface uses GAN frameworks, which generates a high image resolution. The photo taken by the user is removed from Google Cloud within 24 hours.[7][8][9][10]

History

In 2011, Roman Mohylnyi, Oles Petriv and Yaroslav Boyko (students of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy), founded Neocortext. It was a startup engaged in machine learning: from working with the semantics of text to visual content.[11]

In 2013, Denys Dmytrenko joined the founding team, in 2018 Kyrylo Syhyda did too, and in 2019 Dmytro Shvets and Ivan Altsybeiev joined.[12]

In 2016, the team developed a neural network that automatically converts 2D video to 3D. This prompted their work with face-swap technology.[13]

In 2018, the team launched its first service based on this neural network called Reflect.tech.[13]

In January 2020, the team created the Doublicat application, in which a user could replace faces with gifs. Worldwide more than 600 media wrote about Doublicat, including Forbes ,[14] Mashable,[15] The Verge and TNW.[16] The same month the app received the Product of the Week award at Product Hunt.[17] In six months, the number of downloads in the App Store exceeded 27 million. Later the app featured the possibility of swapping a face in a video, and the application was renamed to Reface.

In September 2020, Reface reached 42 million downloads in the App Store. Reface users include celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Joe Rogan, Snoop Dogg, Britney Spears, Dua Lipa, Chris Brown, and Justin Bieber. John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen shot a video (for Legend's song Wild) based on Reface technology.[18][19]
