Roam Research is a Knowledge management and Note-taking software platform designed to help in collecting thoughts via a graph based note-taking system known as Zettelkasten. Roam is built on a graph database that allows users to organize related thoughts without having to worry about which file and folder the thought needs to go into. Roam is used by writers, researchers, investors, engineers, designers, marketers, students, teachers, founders and product managers - to organize their thoughts, tasks, theories and reading lists[1].
History
Roam was founded by Conor White-Sullivan and Joshua Brown. Conor has been working on tools for Collective intelligence for more than nine years, founding the online town common Localocracy (acquired by AOL in 2011) then leading R&D for Huffington Post following the acquisition.[2]. Conor and Josh met at 42.us.org, a France based tuition-free coding university, where Josh placed in the top five of the first 1000 cadets to enter the US program during the month-long application exam. White papers are co-authored by business journalist Richard Meadows, whose trial of early prototypes led him to become the first investor in Roam[3]
Software
Roam is an “note-taking application for networked thought” specifically designed to help you connect your thoughts and group them together in related bits of information, without having to copy and paste links. A little like you would with your own brain[4].Most mind mapping tools only allow one to connect high level concepts together. Instead, Roam takes it a step further. In Roam, each note becomes a node, and there’s no central concept you have to start with[5]. The map is fluid, with no hierarchy, no stacking, no linearity. It’s a giant knowledge web representing your notes and the connections between them. Instead of a limited mind map, you can craft an infinite mental atlas.
Pricing
Roam Research has a two-tiered subscription model: Pro and Believer[6]. An academic email address allows a free Personal plan. As of October 2022, the company upgraded the Pro and Believer plans to allow unlimited private and public graphs, a change from the previous cap in the plan.
