Terrastories is a free, open-source application built in partnership with Indigenous and other communities to locate and map their own oral histories about places of significant meaning or value to them. As a web application, it allows users to overlay recordings of oral histories on an interactive map, and make decisions about setting stories as public or restricted.[1]

Terrastories was first started in 2018 by Ruby for Good, a collective of open-source developers, in partnership with the non-profit organization Amazon Conservation Team and the Matawai people in Suriname.[2] The Matawai were in need of a digital tool that combined interactive maps with recordings of oral histories, which could work entirely offline.[3][4] Since then, a collective of open-source stewards has been guiding the direction of Terrastories, in close collaboration with a global community of users.[5] Terrastories is considered to be a high impact open-source project[6][7], and has been among the most active projects worked on during Hackathon events like Hacktoberfest.[8] The application has been worked on for college credit by undergraduate students at Washington University in St. Louis.[9]

Terrastories is being designed in close alignment with principles of Indigenous Data sovereignty.[10] Users have full control over where the data is stored, and who has access to the stories.[11] Currently, the application is being used by the Haudenosaunee Indigenous people at the Six Nations of the Grand River to compile an Indigenous map to illustrate the relationship of Haudenosaunee people, water, land, and well-being in a digital format.[12] In 2021, Terrastories was included as a featured tool in the Earth Defenders Toolkit, a project of the non-profit tech organization Digital Democracy.[13]
