Unsolved:The Arcana: Or Stock And Share Key

From HandWiki

The Arcana: Or Stock And Share Key[1] is a pamphlet by English astrologer Dr Walter Gorn Old, otherwise known as Sepharial. It is a work of financial astrology which aims to time the stock market by using transits to the natal chart of the New York Stock Exchange and London Stock Exchange, as well as the solar arc directions of both charts.

Key concepts in the book

Signs and decanates ruleships

The ecliptic plane is divided into signs and decanates. Beginning from the Spring Equinox, every 30° is one sign; and within one sign, each 10° is a smaller compartment called a decanate. While this is nothing new in astrology, Sepharial used a different rulership of decanates of his choice.

Signs and Decanates Rulerships
Sign Sign Ruler Decanate Ruler
0°-10° 10°-20° 20°-30°
Aries Mars Mars Sun Venus
Taurus Venus Mercury Moon Saturn
Gemini Mercury Jupiter Mars Sun
Cancer Moon Venus Mercury Moon
Leo Sun Saturn Jupiter Mercury
Virgo Mercury Sun Venus Mercury
Libra Venus Moon Saturn Jupiter
Scorpius Mars Mars Sun Venus
Sagittarius Jupiter Mercury Moon Saturn
Capricorn Saturn Jupiter Mars Sun
Aquarius Saturn Venus Mercury Moon
Pisces Jupiter Saturn Jupiter Mars

When the Moon becomes the Primary Significator, it is obvious that we cannot trace primary indications from the ephemeral aspects of so fast and variable a body as the Moon, so Sepharial suggested to watch the position and aspect of the Ascending Node of the Moon, which is given for the second and third day continuously throughout the year in any good ephemeris. Merely trace the node as if it were the Moon itself and the rest follows in due sequence.

Prime and secondary significators

The Prime Significator of any chart is that planet which rules the sign in which the Sun is found. Thus, in the chart for the New York Stock Exchange, the Sun is in the sign Taurus. This sign is ruled by Venus, and Venus therefore becomes the Prime Significator. The Secondary Significator is the planet which rules the decanate in which the Prime Significator happens to be passing through in the course of its daily motion in the heavens as shown in the ephemeris for the current year.

Solar arc direction

Solar arc direction is the modification of a natal chart by rotating it forward by about 360/365 degree (or 59’8”) per year[2][3]. In other words, if you want to find out the directed chart two years later, you simply add 59’8” × 2 = 118.35° to the longitudes of the planets. Sepharial gave an example of the use of transits. The New York Chart is set for noon on the 17 May 1792 (with daylight saving time). Now at the tragic assassination of President Abraham Lincoln we find the years from the above date of founding to the date of that event, 14 April 1865. The date of the event, 14 April 1865 was 73 years and one month away from the start of the NYSE. This at the rate of 59’8” per day, 72 degrees 2 minutes are added to the natal Midheaven and Ascendant. It is found that the directed Midheaven is squaring natal Neptune and Saturn, and the directed Ascendant was opposite to natal Venus, which are both astrologically bad aspects.

Nature of aspects

Sepharial believed that all planets in good aspect act to enhance values. all planets in bad aspect act to depreciate values. but Jupiter is the greatest expander, and Saturn the greatest depressor of the markets. Consistent with tradition Western astrology, he thought that the multiples of 60° are good and those of 45° are bad[4]:

Good Bad Neutral (Depends on the direction of the market)
Conjunctions (0°) and parallels of Jupiter and Venus Conjunctions (0°) and parallels of Saturn Conjunctions of Mars, Uranus and Neptune.
Trines (120°) Oppositions (180°)
Sextile (60°) Squares (90°)
Sesquisquare (135°)
Semisquare (45°)

The author further elaborated that a boom on the market is produced from a succession of good aspects to the Prime and Secondary Significator. When both are well aspected, the extent is doubled. It is usually terminated by a change of decan, if not sooner by a break of benefic causes. Conversely, a slump is caused by a succession of bad aspects to the Prime and Secondary Significator. Transition points are formed midway between a good and a bad aspect to the same indicator, for example: Venus on the 8th of the month is opposition Jupiter; on the 11th is sextile Saturn; on the 20th it is semi-square Mercury; on the 30th it is semi-square Neptune, and so on.

Effects of the planets

Sepharial made it clear that the effects of different planets are different. His interpretation of the planets are consistent with the view in traditional Western astrology[5]:

Planet In Good Aspect In Bad Aspect
Mercury Cause rises when in good aspect by ‘reports’ and market talk and makes for brisk but small improvements. Cause quick in and out buying and selling with balance against values.
Venus Give equable values and a steady rise in values but is not enduring. Causes a flat and lifeless market.
Mars Stimulate the market and in good aspect causes sharp rises, not enduring. Causes sharp depressions but not enduring.
Jupiter Enhances values by its conjunction or good aspects Cause heavy selling. Deflate what it previously inflated.
Saturn Steady the market. Depress the price when in evil aspects to the Significators, natal or directed.
Uranus Bring in the government broker and shows official manipulation of the market for buying. Bring in the government broker and shows official manipulation of the market for selling.
Neptune Drive prices higher and the action is generally due to “rings” and professional combines moving for a higher selling level. Cause bear sales and the action is generally due to “rings” and professional combines moving for a lower buying level.

The four axioms of predictions

Sepharial listed the following four axioms for predictions:

Axiom one

Planets in transit over the radical places of the Sun, Moon, Midheaven, and Ascendant of the chart have influence on the course of events according to their natures, and so effect the value of securities. For example:

  • In November 1857 there was a considerable panic (financial panic) on the Exchange[6].
  • Time 65 years 6 months. M.C. progress to Leo 2:34, Ascendant in Libra 27, thus:
    • The Ascendant is opposed to Saturn and in conjunction with Neptune.
    • Venus was then in the end of Libra (conjoining natal Neptune)
    • Saturn was in Cancer in square aspect to Venus mid-month in November 1857.
    • Uranus was in transit over M.C. radical.

Axiom two

Directions of the Significators, the Sun, Midheaven, and Ascendant to afflicting aspects (squares or opposition) of malefic planets will cause great depression of securities.

Axiom three

The transiting aspects to the Prime Significator will define the probable time for this depression, for example:

  • A strike against the New York Central and Hudson River Railway started in August 1890[7].
  • It was at 98 years 3 months from the foundation of the NYSE chart.
  • The M.C. in Virgo 5. Saturn was then in transit through that degree of the Zodiac.

Axiom four

Saturn in conjunction, square or opposition by transit to any of the natal General Significators, or their directed places, will cause a serious depression, for example:

  • There was a financial panic in August 1914[8].
  • Saturn was in Gemini 28 in square to Mars in Virgo 28.
  • The MC. of the chart had directed to Virgo 28.
  • Mars was therefore in transit over the MC, and Saturn was in square to it.

Criticism

Graham Bates[9] criticized that this pamphlet is unable to provide solid proof for its theory, because contained therein is “just a set of indicators with a few examples, no proper validation of the indicators. The indications may be very reliable, or maybe not; we cannot tell from the information he gives. Perhaps they should be re-evaluated in current markets.”
