In [[Mathematics|mathematics]], an '''{{mvar|n}}-sphere''' or '''hypersphere''' is an {{mvar|n}}-[[Physics:Dimension|dimensional]] generalization of the 1-dimensional [[Circle|circle]] and 2-dimensional [[Sphere|sphere]] to any non-negative [[Integer|integer]] {{math|''n''}}. The {{mvar|n}}-sphere is the setting for {{mvar|n}}-dimensional [[Spherical geometry|spherical geometry]].

Considered extrinsically, as a [[Hypersurface|hypersurface]] embedded in {{math|(''n''&hairsp;+&hairsp;1)}}-dimensional [[Euclidean space]], an {{math|''n''}}-sphere is the [[Locus (mathematics)|locus]] of [[Point (geometry)|point]]s at equal [[Euclidean distance|distance]] (the ''[[Radius|radius]]'') from a given ''center'' point. Its [[Interior (topology)|interior]], consisting of all points closer to the center than the radius, is an {{math|(''n''&hairsp;+&hairsp;1)}}-dimensional [[Ball (mathematics)|ball]]. In particular:

* The {{math|0}}-sphere is the pair of points at the ends of a [[Line segment|line segment]] ({{math|1}}-ball).
* The {{math|1}}-sphere is a [[Circle|circle]], the [[Circumference|circumference]] of a [[Disk (mathematics)|disk]] ({{math|2}}-ball) in the two-dimensional [[Euclidean plane|plane]].
* The {{math|2}}-sphere, often simply called a sphere, is the [[Boundary (topology)|boundary]] of a {{math|3}}-ball in [[Three-dimensional space|three-dimensional space]].
* The [[3-sphere|{{math|3}}-sphere]] is the boundary of a {{math|4}}-ball in [[Four-dimensional space|four-dimensional space]].

Considered intrinsically, when {{math|''n'' ≥ 1}}, the {{mvar|n}}-sphere is a [[Riemannian manifold]] of positive [[Constant curvature|constant curvature]], and is orientable. The geodesics of the {{mvar|n}}-sphere are called [[Great circle|great circle]]s.

The [[Stereographic projection|stereographic projection]] maps the {{mvar|n}}-sphere onto {{mvar|n}}-space with a single adjoined [[Point at infinity|point at infinity]]; under the [[Physics:Metric tensor|metric]] thereby defined, <math>\R^n \cup \{\infty\}</math> is a model for the {{mvar|n}}-sphere.

In the more general setting of [[Topology|topology]], any [[Topological space|topological space]] that is homeomorphic to the unit {{mvar|n}}-sphere is called an {{mvar|n}}-''sphere''. Under inverse stereographic projection, the {{mvar|n}}-sphere is the one-point compactification of {{mvar|n}}-space. The {{mvar|n}}-spheres admit several other topological descriptions: for example, they can be constructed by gluing two {{mvar|n}}-dimensional spaces together, by identifying the boundary of an [[Hypercube|{{mvar|n}}-cube]] with a point, or (inductively) by forming the [[Suspension (topology)|suspension]] of an {{math|(''n''&hairsp;−&hairsp;1)}}-sphere.  When {{math|''n'' ≥ 2}} it is simply connected; the {{math|1}}-sphere (circle) is not simply connected; the {{math|0}}-sphere is not even connected, consisting of two discrete points.

For any [[Natural number|natural number]] {{math|''n''}}, an {{math|''n''}}-sphere of radius {{math|''r''}} is defined as the set of points in {{math|(''n'' + 1)}}-dimensional [[Euclidean space]] that are at distance {{math|''r''}} from some fixed point {{math|'''c'''}}, where {{math|''r''}} may be any positive [[Real number|real number]] and where {{math|'''c'''}} may be any point in {{math|(''n'' + 1)}}-dimensional space. In particular:
* a 0-sphere is a pair of points {{math|{''c'' − ''r'', ''c'' + ''r''<nowiki>}</nowiki>}}, and is the boundary of a line segment (1-ball).
