DuckDuckGo Private Browser is a free and partly open-source private web browser by DuckDuckGo. It's available for Windows 10 (May 2020).[1], MacOS (10.15 or later)[2], iOS, and Android devices.[3]. Mobile versions are open-sourced[4][5].

It's using OS-provided default rendering engine, so it doesn't have own engine. Which means that Blink[6] and Webkit rendering engines are being used on Windows and MacOS respectively. [7][8]

Features

The browser has built-in features like private search, tracker blocking, increased encryption, email protection[3], Bitwarden integration[9], third-party Tracker Loading Protection[10], enforced encryption[11]

On the interface, there is a 'Fire' button which erases all the history and stored data when clicked.[8]

Duck Player allows users to watch YouTube videos without being target of ads and cookies.[9]

The app contains an automatic cookie consent tool for popups and support for the Global Data Privacy Control.[12]

Controversies

In May 2022, it was discovered that tracking scripts by Microsoft products like Bing and LinkedIn are not blocked by browser.[13] DuckDuckGo's founder and CEO explained it by noting "currently contractually restricted by Microsoft", so they cannot block Microsoft scripts. It is because the company uses Microsoft's Bing search engine to get better search results. In August, company announced that they will block Microsoft trackers in its browsers.[14]
