Neko Kawaigari! Crane Inuneko Byouin Shinsatsuchuu (Japanese: ネコっかわいがり! ～クレインイヌネコ病院診察中～), alternatively known as Dote Up A Cat, is a Japanese adult visual novel video game developed by 13cm, released in Japan on February 24, 2006, for Windows as a DVD.[1] A web novel titled What a Wonderful World was released as a sequel to the original novel.[2] The gameplay in Neko Kawaigari follows a linear plot line, which offers pre-determined scenarios and courses of interaction, and focuses on the appeal of the five female main characters.
Plot
The stage is a small clinic in the suburbs, in a world in which humans with cat-and dog ears are commonplace. Jack, the protagonist and a dog-man, works as the assistant for Dr. Crane, the head doctor of a secluded animal clinic where various cat-girls are being treated. Jack has no memory of his life before coming to the clinic, and he works for Dr. Crane to repay her kindness after she took him in. However, as the only male in the clinic, a certain serious role was imposed: Jack is to have sexual intercourse with the patients to cure their regular symptoms caused by an illness called "DOTES".[3][4]
True Story
Later in the game, the true background of the story is revealed: One day, dogs and cats, which were commonly held as pets, succumbed to mysterious deaths all over the world. With the new type of infectious disease, human beings struggled to save dog and cats, leading to their complete extinction on earth. Over time, the virus mutated and infected the humans. It caused them to become animalized (women received cat traits and men dog traits), loss of ability to reason, and ultimately death. This disease was called "racial uniqueness and disappearance syndrome", DOTES. It was virus researcher Norma Crane who was studying DOTES and discovered a method to make a vaccine, by transplanting and culturing a pathogen into the brain of a subject, but becoming the subject would result in death. Jack studied viruses as an assistant of Norma, but when he found out that he inherited a suitability as a DOTES vaccine subject, he applied for it. At that time he lost his memory and was called by the name of the dog "Jack" who succumbed to DOTES, by his lover, Alice Crane.[3][4]
Characters
- Jack (ジャック Jakku)
- Dr. Crane's assistant. Jack shares her studious devotion to medicine, although not to the same obsessive degree as her. He takes on a domestic role as the primary caretaker while Crane is absent. Standing at 190cm, he can seem rather intimidating, but in reality, he is very calm and kind, as well as skilled with his hands. With his kind, quiet demeanor, he is accommodating to a fault, but at times, his logical mindset seems to hide very troubled emotions. He has no memory of his life before the clinic. He was allegedly taken in by Dr. Crane (who was the one that bestowed the name "Jack" to him), and has chosen to work for her to repay her kindness.[5]
- Dr. Crane (クレイン先生 Kurein sensei)
- Voiced by Morikawa Youko. Despite her youthful appearance, Crane is the leading doctor at the hospital, whose brilliant mind is consumed by her work. She devotes herself to long hours of exhaustive research, becoming secretive and temperamental if questioned. Although she may come across as strict and sharp, her passion for finding a cure is unparalleled, desperate to find a way to alleviate her friends' symptoms.[5]
- Faye (フェイ Fei)
- Voiced by Shinruu Karin. A patient of the clinic. A Siamese cat. Her condition causes emotional instability, her moods going up and down quickly. Although she is usually a confident type of person, she can quickly become paranoid and depressed, refusing to interact with anyone. Faye's sharp mannerisms make her the most difficult of all the patients, reluctant to cooperate when it comes to examinations. Constantly bickering with Umi & Nami, or arguing with Jack, her overemotional nature is a consequence of low self-esteem, anxious to be included by the others.[5]
- Norma (ノーマ Nōma)
- Voiced by Suzumori Chisato. The oldest patient in the clinic. A perpetually-sleepy Persian cat who lives life slowly. She enjoys reading, and may be unexpectedly intelligent. Norma is the elegant, maternal figure of all the patients, whose daily rituals consist of little more than sleeping and snacking. Although she may be prone to flights of fancy, contrary to initial impressions, she is very bookish and practical.[5]
- Umi & Nami (ウミ、ナミ)
- Voiced by Asari. A pair of twin patients who may not be distinguished from each other at first glance, their only difference being the colors of their tails (Nami's is brown with a white tip, Umi's is white with a brown tip). They are exactly alike in personality and almost synchronized in voice and motion, often speaking in synch or finishing each other's sentences. They are innocent, active, mischievous, and the principle of kittens themselves. Umi and Nami serve as the hospital's mascots.
- Umi wants nothing more than Nami's approval and devotion, but Nami's eagerness to be self-reliant can lead to a power struggle between them. While not as mature as Nami, Umi can be just as stubborn when she decides upon something, and is more than capable of matching her sister when it comes to arguments and disagreements.[5]
- Nami is the more outgoing of the siblings - Nami shares Umi's playful, demanding demeanor, constantly requiring attention and affection. While she loves Umi unquestionably, she also longs for independence, to be seen as her own person instead of one half of a pair.[5]

What a wonderful world
- What a wonderful world is a doujinshi which was created by one of the main authors of the original visual novel, and distributed at Comic Market 71 on August 13, 2006. It revolves the "true" after ending story and became the concluding version of the story. As it was published as a special comic form, a doujinshi, access to a copy became difficult depending on the customer base. However, due to the consideration of the production side, the content was released for free on the internet as "web-edition".[2]
- In addition, Souvenir distributed a reprinted booklet of the web-novel, free of charge, at Comic Market 78.[6] Currently the contents are publicly accessible on pixiv.
