In metric geometry, an injective metric space, or equivalently a hyperconvex metric space, is a metric space with certain properties generalizing those of the real line and of L distances in higher-dimensional vector spaces. These properties can be defined in two seemingly different ways: hyperconvexity involves the intersection properties of closed balls in the space, while injectivity involves the isometric embeddings of the space into larger spaces. However it is a theorem of (Aronszajn Panitchpakdi) that these two different types of definitions are equivalent.[1]

Hyperconvexity

A metric space [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is said to be hyperconvex if it is convex and its closed balls have the binary Helly property. That is:

  1. Any two points [math]\displaystyle{ x }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ y }[/math] can be connected by the isometric image of a line segment of length equal to the distance between the points (i.e. [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is a path space).
  2. If [math]\displaystyle{ F }[/math] is any family of closed balls [math]\displaystyle{ {\bar B}_r(p) = \{q \mid d(p,q) \le r\} }[/math] such that each pair of balls in [math]\displaystyle{ F }[/math] meets, then there exists a point [math]\displaystyle{ x }[/math] common to all the balls in [math]\displaystyle{ F }[/math].

Equivalently, a metric space [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is hyperconvex if, for any set of points [math]\displaystyle{ p_i }[/math] in [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] and radii [math]\displaystyle{ r_i\gt 0 }[/math] satisfying [math]\displaystyle{ r_i+r_j\ge d(p_i,p_j) }[/math] for each [math]\displaystyle{ i }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ j }[/math], there is a point [math]\displaystyle{ q }[/math] in [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] that is within distance [math]\displaystyle{ r_i }[/math] of each [math]\displaystyle{ p_i }[/math] (that is, [math]\displaystyle{ d(p_i,q) \le r_i }[/math] for all [math]\displaystyle{ i }[/math]).

Injectivity

A retraction of a metric space [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is a function [math]\displaystyle{ f }[/math] mapping [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] to a subspace of itself, such that

  1. for all [math]\displaystyle{ x }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ f(f(x))=f(x) }[/math]; that is, [math]\displaystyle{ f }[/math] is the identity function on its image (i.e. it is idempotent), and
  2. for all [math]\displaystyle{ x }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ t }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ d(f(x),f(y))\le d(x,y) }[/math]; that is, [math]\displaystyle{ f }[/math] is nonexpansive.

A retract of a space [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is a subspace of [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] that is an image of a retraction. A metric space [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is said to be injective if, whenever [math]\displaystyle{ X }[/math] is isometric to a subspace [math]\displaystyle{ Z }[/math] of a space [math]\displaystyle{ Y }[/math], that subspace [math]\displaystyle{ Z }[/math] is a retract of [math]\displaystyle{ Y }[/math].

Due to the equivalence between hyperconvexity and injectivity, these spaces are all also injective.

Properties

In an injective space, the radius of the minimum ball that contains any set [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math] is equal to half the diameter of [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math]. This follows since the balls of radius half the diameter, centered at the points of [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math], intersect pairwise and therefore by hyperconvexity have a common intersection; a ball of radius half the diameter centered at a point of this common intersection contains all of [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math]. Thus, injective spaces satisfy a particularly strong form of Jung's theorem.

Every injective space is a complete space,[2] and every metric map (or, equivalently, nonexpansive mapping, or short map) on a bounded injective space has a fixed point.[3] A metric space is injective if and only if it is an injective object in the category of metric spaces and metric maps.[4]
