Samsung Internet for Android is a mobile web browser for smartphones and tablets developed by Samsung. It is based on the open-source Chromium project. It is pre-installed on Samsung Galaxy devices. Since 2015, it has been available for download from Google Play.[1][2] Samsung estimated that it had around 400 million monthly active users in 2016. According to StatCounter, it had a market share of around 4.98% (among 53.26% for all Chrome variants) around May 2018.[3]

Most of the code differences to the standard Chromium code base were introduced in order to support Samsung-specific hardware, such as Gear VR and biometric sensors.[4][5]

History

Samsung Internet replaced the stock Android browser as the default on Samsung Galaxy devices in 2012.[6] Around early 2013, it was decided to base the browser on Chromium, and the first Chromium-based version was shipped with an S4 model later that year.[7]

Version 4 was released in early 2016, adding secret mode, content cards, floating video, video history feature, web push, service workers, custom tabs, and content blocker extension.[8][9]

Version 5 was released on December 16, 2016, adding web payment and enhanced video assistant.[10][11]

Version 5.4 was released as a public beta in March 2017,[12] adding tab navigation with swipe gesture, quick menu, enhanced navigation page (China only), content blocker status UI (in menu).[13] The stable version was subsequently released worldwide in May 2017, following the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S8.[14]

Version 6.2 was released on October 30, 2017, adding high contrast mode and night mode.[15][16]

Version 6.4 was released on February 19, 2018, adding download manager and enabled web bluetooth by default.[17][18]

Version 7.2 was released on June 7, 2018, adding WebGL2, Intersection Observer, Web Assembly and Protected Browsing.[19]

Version 7.4 was released on August 19, 2018, adding authentication with Intelligent Scan, customised Reader Mode and Download History improvements.[20]

Support

The later version (v6.2) of Samsung Internet for Android supports all Android 5.0 and above phones.[21]

Previously, (v5.0) Samsung Internet for Android was only supported on Samsung Galaxy and Google Nexus phones with Android 5.0 and above.[22]
