Vipera barani is a venomous viper species endemic to Turkey. No subspecies are currently recognized.[4]
Etymology
The specific name, barani, is in honor of Turkish herpetologist İbrahim Baran.[5]
Description
Vipera barani is a stoutly built species. Adult females are reported to reach a maximum total length (body + tail) of 60 cm (24 in). Adult males are shorter with a maximum total length of 54.5 cm (21.5 in).[2]
Geographic range
Vipera barani is found in northwestern Turkey.
The type locality is listed as "ca. 60 km N Adapazari, Türkei" (= Adapazari, Turkey).[1]
Conservation status
The species V. barani is listed as strictly protected (Appendix II) under the Berne Convention.[6]
