Biography:John M. Butler (scientist)
John M. Butler is a leading expert[citation needed] on forensic DNA profiling. He is a fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Butler received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
Butler has written several textbooks on forensic DNA typing covering all aspects of the underlying molecular genetic methods, the application to forensic casework and the biostatistical interpretation of results. He has also written widely on DNA research, including analyzing the possibilities of DNA research applied to the Book of Mormon, and multiple articles on polymerase chain reactions where he was the lead author. He has also studied the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA use, including its role in genealogical DNA testing.[1]
Butler received the Scientific Prize of the International Society for Forensic Genetics in 2003.[2]
Butler is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
