Rick Wiles is a right-wing radio host. He is best known for hosting TruNews, a daily, nationally syndicated television program, where he promotes various conspiracy theories and beliefs. He is a consistent critic of progressivism which he pairs with a fundamentalist Christian outlook on various issues.[1] Wiles previously worked as a marketing manager for various cable media channels. After working for various broadcasting networks, he founded TruNews and became its host in 1998 which is currently based in Vero Beach, Florida.[2] The network has press passes and regularly sends its main reporter Edward Szall to represent the network at many events.

History

Before becoming a radio host, he worked in media as a marketing and advertisement sales manager. His career in this industry first began working in a radio station in his early 20s. After gaining experience in media, he progressed to become a sales manager in advertisement working for then start-up cable channels such as CNN and ESPN in the early 1980s. With additional experience in management, he was hired in 1984 by the Christian Broadcasting Network as the first National Cable Marketing Manager. later in 1995, he was hired as the Marketing Director for Trinity Broadcasting Network. Wiles then resigned in September 1998 from the Trinity Broadcasting Network to pursue a career as a radio host.

Founding TruNews

Wiles founded the organisation later to be called TruNews in September 1998, based in Dallas, Texas as a ministry. During later months, Wiles toured America where he spoke of moral decline and aimed to prevent 'economic collapse' and 'war on American soil.' On May 24, 1999, the organisation then named Americas Hope made its first broadcast. After five years of regular broadcasts, the news station changed its name titled America Freedom News for a brief period. Wiles later changed it a second time to its current name, TruNews. He found this name most appropriate as he personally believed his news was the only source that could be trusted.[3] Wiles previously broadcast his radio show on WRMI (Radio Miami International), but has since adopted the internet as its sole platform, abandoning the short-wave broadcasting station.[4] He has occasionally appeared on Fox News and is a frequent guest of the Jim Bakker Show.[5] TruNews has recently gained press passes and credentials, as such it regularly attends events and conferences via its correspondent Edward Szall, including those hosted within the White House.[6][7]

Views

Wiles views have been described as far-right by Right Wing Watch. He has been known for promoting various conspiracy theories and controversial statements. He is staunchly opposed to abortion, LGBT rights, immigration and Islam. He also opposes zionism, often making statements that can be perceived as antisemitic. He has called for the extinction of Islam which he calls 'a cancer' and believes Muslims should be removed from the country. He also believes immigration is retribution from God to 'push white people out of America.' He is a staunch supporter of Donald Trump. Wiles has criticized fellow radio show host Alex Jones, who he has previously worked with for attracting negative attention to similar right-wing radio hosts. He believes Jones controversial statements, such as most notably his denial or scepticism of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and following social media removing InfoWars from their websites, could indirectly cause a crackdown and censorship of radio shows that share similar viewpoints.[9][10]

Conspiracy theories and beliefs

Wiles has promoted various conspiracy theories and beliefs. His assertions usually take an apocalyptic tone, such as believing 'America is on the verge of a French Revolution-style upheaval.' He believes there will soon be a third world war with China, and has stated that they are training their civilian population in naval warfare.[11] After the 2018 Russia–United States summit, he believed a coup would soon occur.[12][13]
