A. calvus is commonly kept as an aquarium fish in setups devoted to East African fish. Several local variants exist. Examples include:

  • 'Black Sambia'
  • 'Black Pectoral'
  • 'Black Zaire'
  • 'Black Kapampa'
  • 'Yellow'
  • 'White'
