The calculus of moving surfaces (CMS) [1] is an extension of the classical tensor calculus to deforming manifolds. Central to the CMS is the Tensorial Time Derivative [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] whose original definition [2] was put forth by Jacques Hadamard. It plays the role analogous to that of the covariant derivative [math]\displaystyle{ \nabla _{\alpha } }[/math] on differential manifolds in that it produces a tensor when applied to a tensor.

Suppose that [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma_t }[/math] is the evolution of the surface [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma }[/math] indexed by a time-like parameter [math]\displaystyle{ t }[/math]. The definitions of the surface velocity [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] and the operator [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] are the geometric foundations of the CMS. The velocity C is the rate of deformation of the surface [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma }[/math] in the instantaneous normal direction. The value of [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] at a point [math]\displaystyle{ P }[/math] is defined as the limit

where [math]\displaystyle{ P^{*} }[/math] is the point on [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma_{t+h} }[/math] that lies on the straight line perpendicular to [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma_{t} }[/math] at point P. This definition is illustrated in the first geometric figure below. The velocity [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] is a signed quantity: it is positive when [math]\displaystyle{ \overline{PP^{*}} }[/math] points in the direction of the chosen normal, and negative otherwise. The relationship between [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma_{t} }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] is analogous to the relationship between location and velocity in elementary calculus: knowing either quantity allows one to construct the other by differentiation or integration.

The Tensorial Time Derivative [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] for a scalar field F defined on [math]\displaystyle{ \Sigma_{t} }[/math] is the rate of change in [math]\displaystyle{ F }[/math] in the instantaneously normal direction:

The above definitions are geometric. In analytical settings, direct application of these definitions may not be possible. The CMS gives analytical definitions of C and [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] in terms of elementary operations from calculus and differential geometry.

Analytical definitions

For analytical definitions of [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math], consider the evolution of [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math] given by

where [math]\displaystyle{ Z^{i} }[/math] are general curvilinear space coordinates and [math]\displaystyle{ S^{\alpha } }[/math] are the surface coordinates. By convention, tensor indices of function arguments are dropped. Thus the above equations contains [math]\displaystyle{ S }[/math] rather than [math]\displaystyle{ S^\alpha }[/math]. The velocity object [math]\displaystyle{ \textbf{V}=V^i\textbf{Z}_i }[/math] is defined as the partial derivative

The velocity [math]\displaystyle{ C }[/math] can be computed most directly by the formula

where [math]\displaystyle{ N_i }[/math] are the covariant components of the normal vector [math]\displaystyle{ \vec{N} }[/math].

Also, defining the shift tensor representation of the Surface's Tangent Space [math]\displaystyle{ Z^{\alpha}_{i}=\textbf{S}^\alpha\cdot\textbf{Z}_i }[/math] and the Tangent Velocity as [math]\displaystyle{ V^\alpha=Z^\alpha_iV^i }[/math] , then the definition of the [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] derivative for an invariant F reads

For tensors, an appropriate generalization is needed. The proper definition for a representative tensor [math]\displaystyle{ T^{i\alpha }_{j\beta } }[/math] reads

where [math]\displaystyle{ \Gamma^k_{mj} }[/math] are Christoffel symbols and [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\Gamma}^\alpha_\beta=\nabla_\beta V^\alpha-C B^\alpha_\beta }[/math] is the surface's appropriate temporal symbols ([math]\displaystyle{ B^\alpha_\beta }[/math] is a matrix representation of the surface's curvature shape operator)

Properties of the [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math]-derivative

The [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math]-derivative commutes with contraction, satisfies the product rule for any collection of indices

and obeys a chain rule for surface restrictions of spatial tensors:

where [math]\displaystyle{ Z_{ij} }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ Z^{ij} }[/math] are covariant and contravariant metric tensors, [math]\displaystyle{ \delta ^{i}_{j} }[/math] is the Kronecker delta symbol, and [math]\displaystyle{ \varepsilon _{ijk} }[/math] and [math]\displaystyle{ \varepsilon ^{ijk} }[/math] are the Levi-Civita symbols. The main article on Levi-Civita symbols describes them for Cartesian coordinate systems. The preceding rule is valid in general coordinates, where the definition of the Levi-Civita symbols must include the square root of the determinant of the covariant metric tensor [math]\displaystyle{ Z_{ij} }[/math].

The [math]\displaystyle{ \dot{\nabla} }[/math] derivative of the key surface objects leads to highly concise and attractive formulas. When applied to the covariant surface metric tensor [math]\displaystyle{ S_{\alpha \beta } }[/math] and the contravariant metric tensor [math]\displaystyle{ S^{\alpha \beta } }[/math], the following identities result
