Magnesium nickel hydride is the chemical compound with formula Mg
2[[[Chemistry:Nickel|Ni]]H
4]. It is a reddish-brown crystalline solid. It contains 3.6% by weight of hydrogen and has been studied as a potential hydrogen storage medium.[2][3]
Synthesis
The compound can be obtained by heating magnesium and nickel metal powders in hydrogen.[1]

The intermetallic compound Mg
2Ni reacts with hydrogen at 350 °C (662 °F) to yield Mg
2[NiH
4].[4]
Structure
It consists of Mg2+ cations and [NiH
4]4− anions. It is in a form of a monoclinic crystals that transform into the cubic crystals at 220 °C (428 °F).[5]
