The Chen Distribution is a continuous probability distribution with domain on (0,inf⁡). It was originally proposed by Zhenmin Chen as an alternate two-parameter lifetime distribution.[1] The motivation was the need to model bathtub-shaped failure rates, useful for reliability and survival analysis. The failure rate function can also show an increasing shape.

Definitions

Probability density function

Its probability density function is defined as:

f(x;λ,β)=λβxβ−1exp⁡{xβ+λ(1−exβ)}

where x>0, and λ>0 and β>0 are shape parameters.

Cumulative distribution function

And its cumulative distribution function is:

F(x;λ,β)=1−eλ(1−exβ)

where x>0.

Quantile function

The quantile function of the Chen distribution is given by:[2]

Q(p;λ,β)=[ln⁡{1−ln⁡(1−p)λ}]1β

where 0<p<1.

Properties

Moments

The rth raw moment of the Chen distribution can be obtained through:

μ'r=𝔼[Xr]=λeλ∫1∞e−λx(ln⁡x)rβdx=λeλΓ(rβ+1)E0rβ(λ)

for r>0.

Skewness and kurtosis

The skewness and kurtosis measures can be obtained upon substituting the raw moments from the expressions:

skewness=μ'3−3μ'2μ+2μ3σ3,kurtosis=μ'4−4μ'3μ+6μ'2μ2−3μ4σ4

Hazard rate

The hazard rate function of the Chen distribution is given by:

h(x;λ,β)=λβxβ−1exβ

where x>0.

Parameter estimation

Let 𝐱=(x1,…,xn) be a random sample of size n from the Chen distribution with cumulative probability function defined before. Then, the likelihood function of (λ,β) based on the first k order statistics is given by

L(λ,β)=n!(n−k)!λkβk∏i=1kx(i)β−1e∑i=1kx(i)β+kλ−λ∑i=1kex(i)β+(n−k)λ−(n−k)λex(k)β.

The components of the score vector U(θ)=[∂ℓ(θ)∂λ,∂ℓ(θ)∂β]⊤ are

∂ℓ(θ)∂λ=kλ−∑i=1kex(i)β+n+(n−k)ex(k)β

and

∂ℓ(θ)∂β=kβ+∑i=1klog⁡x(i)+∑i=1kx(i)βlog⁡x(i)−λ[∑i=1kex(i)βx(i)βlog⁡x(i)+(n−k)ex(k)βlog⁡x(k)]

The MLEs of θ, denoted by θ^=(λ^,β^)⊤, are obtained as the simultaneous solution of U(θ)=0, where 0 is a two-dimensional null vector.

Specifically, β^ is obtained by solving the non-linear equation:

kβ+∑i=1klog⁡x(i)+∑i=1kx(i)βlog⁡x(i)−k[∑i=1kex(i)βx(i)βlog⁡x(i)+(n−k)ex(k)βx(k)βlog⁡x(k)]∑i=1kex(i)β−n−(n−k)ex(k)β=0

and λ^ is subsequently given in closed form by:

λ^=k∑i=1kex(i)β^−n−(n−k)ex(k)β^

Applications

The Chen distribution was utilized in:

  • Reliability inference for lifetime data in oil breakdown and cancer patient survival data.[3]
  • Graft survival times of renal transplant patients.[4]
