AlphaSense Inc. is a New York City -based software company that develops an artificial intelligence-based search engine to sort and analyze public and private financial data.[1] The company was valued as a tech unicorn in June 2022.[3]

History

AlphaSense was founded in San Francisco, California in 2011 by Jack Kokko and Raj Neervannan.[1]

In March 2016, the company raised its first funding, in a Series A valued at $33 million.[4] The round was led by Quantum Strategic Partners, an arm of Soros Fund Management, and venture capital firm Tribeca Venture Partners.[5]

In February 2017, Fortune magazine recognized AlphaSense as one of 50 best funded companies leading the AI revolution.[6]

In June 2019, the company released a sentiment analysis tool that analyzed documents to determine the tenor of their language.[7]

In July, the company raised $50 million in a Series B, led by Innovation Endeavors, a venture capital firm backed by Google's former CEO Eric Schmidt.[2]

In September 2021, the company raised $180 million in a Series C led by Goldman Sachs.[1] In October, the company acquired Stream by Mosiac, a cloud platform that provides transcripts of business calls for analysts and portfolio managers.[8]

In May 2022, AlphaSense acquired competitor Sentieo.[9] In June, the company announced a $225 million funding round led by Goldman Sachs and Viking Global Investors, reportedly valuing the company at $1.7 billion.[3]

Products

AlphaSense develops a market intelligence search engine using artificial intelligence to sort and analyze public and private financial data.[1] It gives its clients access to a variety of financial data including Wall Street equity research, trade journals, analyst research, conference call transcripts and company documents.[1][8] The company's natural language processing (NLP) technology highlights and labels relevant information.[10]

Companies use the software to monitor competitors and acquisition targets.[5] The software can also be used for large scale number crunching, such as compiling stock buyback data across multiple companies.[11][12] The company's technology also analyzes documents for sentiment, providing a score that traders can use to make investment decisions.[7]

Operations

AlphaSense is headquartered in New York City.[1] As of June 2022, the company reported over 1,000 employees, across offices in the US, UK, Finland, Germany, and India.[3] Co-founder Jack Kokko is the company's CEO, and co-founder Raj Neervannan is the company's CTO.[1] The company's clients include large asset management firms and banks, and companies working within energy, industrials, consumer goods and technology sectors.[2]
