Contentsquare is a digital analytics and user experience company. It develops a SaaS platform that analyses online customer interactions, to help businesses improve their applications and websites.[2]

The company was founded in Paris in 2012, and is a tech unicorn since 2021.[1]

History

Contentsquare was founded in Paris, France in 2012 by Jonathan Cherki. He was attending ESSEC Business School, and with the assistance of the ESSEC Ventures incubator, he created an application to measure digital performance, which became Contentsquare.[3][4] Cherki became the company's CEO.[1]

In late 2016, the company raised $20M in Series A led by Highland Europe.[5]

In January 2018, the company picked up $42 million in Series B funding, led by United States venture capital firm Canaan Partners, with participation from tech growth fund Highland Europe, investment company Eurazeo, and Italian family office H14.[5]

In January 2019, the company raised $60 million in a Series C round, led by return investor Eurazeo, with participation from existing investors Canaan Partners, Highland Europe and H14.[6] In July, the company made its first two acquisitions, buying Israeli user experience company firm Clicktale, and Paris-based Pricing Assistant, a company that analyzed the effects of price and merchandising on consumer behavior.[7]

In May 2020, Contentsquare closed a $190 million Series D, led by BlackRock's Private Equity Partners team.[2] In October, Contentsquare acquired Dareboost, a developer of web performance technology, and accessibility software company Adapt My Web.[8][9]

In May 2021, Contentsquare raised a $500 million Series E round led by the SoftBank Vision Fund 2, along with existing investors Eurazeo, KKR, Canaan Partners and Highland Europe.[1] The funding valued Contentsquare at $2.8 billion, making it a tech unicorn.[1] In July, the company acquired French machine-learning startup Upstride.[9] In September, Contentsquare acquired Hotjar, a provider of digital experience analytics software for small- and medium-sized businesses.[10] In December, business publication Inc. reported that Contentsquare partnered with education platform LinkedIn Learning to provide training to employees, as part of businesses' retention efforts.[11]

Products

Contentsquare develops software-as-a-service (SaaS) that uses artificial intelligence to analyze customer behavior through billions of web, mobile and app interactions, and add automatic insights.[2][6] The company's platform is used to measure user experience, increase engagement and improve conversion rates.[2][12] The company collects and analyzes customer behavior like mouse movements, touches and swipes, and analyzes them to give recommendations.[1]

Operations

Contentsquare is headquartered in Paris, and operates additional offices worldwide.[7] In May 2021, it reported over 800 employees.[1] Its CEO is Jonathan Cherki.[1] In May 2021, the company reported over 750 clients, including BMW, Gucci, Sephora, Verizon and Rakuten.[13]
