Included Health is an American digital health company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It provides virtual and in-person healthcare services, including primary and behavioral care, care navigation, and benefits guidance for employees and health plan members.[1]

The company was formed in 2021 through the merger of Grand Rounds Health and Doctor On Demand. The combined organization rebranded under the Included Health name later that year.[2]

History

The company launched in 2011 under the name Grand Rounds Health, co-founded by Owen Tripp and Rusty Hofmann.[3] The original business model focused on expert medical opinion and navigation services.[4][5] The founders cited personal experiences navigating the healthcare system as the motivation for creating the company.[3][6][7]

As Grand Rounds, the company, headquartered in San Francisco, raised $272 million, highlighted by a Series E round led by The Carlyle Group.[8][1]

In March 2021, Grand Rounds Health and Doctor On Demand merged in a deal with Owen Tripp being named the CEO of the new organization.[9][10][11] The merged entity integrated care navigation services with virtual primary and specialized care.[12]

In May 2021, the two entities purchased Included Health, a care platform focused on LGBTQ+ communities.[13] Later that year, the two entities rebranded, adopting the legacy Included Health name to demonstrate an array of services.[14][15]

In December 2021, the company announced it was targeting an IPO for the first half of 2022.[16] The company subsequently remained private, citing worsening market conditions.[17]

Included Health launched its All-Included Care product in November 2022, a service combining virtual care, access to in-person care, and patient navigation.[18]

Partnerships

The company has served as the virtual care partner for Walmart's employee health plans since 2016, expanding to nationwide coverage by 2023, offering services such as virtual mental health care and at-home lab testing.[19][20] Data published from the multi-year pilot with Walmart reported an 11% decrease in the total cost of care and a 24% reduction in average HbA1c for diabetes patients.[19][21]

Other clients include:

  • Salesforce, for which it provides employee mental health and gender-inclusive benefits.[22]
  • AT&T, offering a virtual healthcare platform for whole-person care.[23]
  • California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS), offering healthcare and navigation services for public employees and retirees.[24][25] Since 2024, the company has partnered with Blue Shield of California to provide integrated services for approximately 400,000 CalPERS PPO members.[26]

Products and services

Included Health's services consist of virtual primary, urgent, and mental health care, alongside care navigation and benefits guidance for members.[27][9]

Included Health launched its 'Al-Included Care product in November 2022, a service combining virtual care, access to in-person care, and patient navigation.[18]

Research

In 2021, Grand Rounds Health collaborated with several employers to launch the Black Community Innovation Coalition, an initiative that provides telemedicine and care navigation for Black American employees.[28]

The company periodically publishes reports, such as the Workforce Vitals Report (2023), based on employee surveys regarding health, mental health, and economic stressors.[29] In January 2025, Included Health participated in a study on the impacts of virtual care navigation services among LGBTQ+ populations, published in JMIR Formative Research.[30]
