SenseTime (Chinese: 商汤科技) is a Chinese technology company specializing in artificial intelligence and facial recognition, with offices across China , Hong Kong and Japan . Its products serve over hundreds of well-known companies and government agencies, across a wide range of industries including security, finance, smartphones, mobile Internet, robotics, and automobile.[1] SenseTime is regarded as the world's biggest startup company in artificial intelligence.

SenseTime was founded in October 2014 as an academic project by Professor Tang Xiao'ou from the Department of Information Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong. The project was commercialised the following year and Xu Li became its CEO. After research and development, it launched products in 2016. It produces facial recognition systems and has the Chinese government as one of its main clients for their mass surveillance. The algorithms used by the company are trained on database containing 2 billion images supplied by the Chinese government agencies.[2] In the late 2017 to early 2018, it raised US$1.2b in capital.[3][4]

The American business magazine Forbes listed Xu as number seven on its 2018 "40 under 40" list.[5]

On 10 September 2018, SenseTime received US $1b investment from SBCVC and raised its value to US $6b in capital.[6]
