Shamra Search Engine is a Syrian web search that was launched in September 6 2015 [1]. Shamra was built using Information Retrieval technologies and Arabic NLP. [2] The name Shamra was inspired by the village of Ras Shamra where Ugarit alphabets was discovered in 1929.
In March 2019, Shamra Search Engine was presented by the ministry of communication and technology in Syria as a show-case of the digital development in Syria during the meeting of the United Nations - Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.[3]
Team and Founder
According to company page in crunchbase, the search engine was founded by Shadi Saleh who is a PhD. student in Charles University in Prague [4], and the team contains around 20 employees [5].

Web search service focuses on the Syrian Arabic content.
Places
Shamra Places provides listing of place entities in Syria, where users can contribute to the data by adding new places, voting on other's contribution and suggesting editing existing information.[6]
Scholars Search
Shamra Academia was launched in 27th of December 2015, a few months after the launch of Shamra search engine. Shamra Academia enables search in the Academic publications from scientific publishers in the Syrian universities. The publications are first indexed into categories, each indexed item contains the title of the publication in Arabic and English languages together with its abstract and meta information about authors, date of publications, and the main keywords. [7] [8]
In 2017, there were around 3,913 indexed scientific papers in the platform [9], while in the 13th of July 2020, the number increased to 8,666 as shown in the service homepage [7]

Classified Advertising
Shamra offers free classified advertising listing in Syria, wherein each ads can contain basic information and an attached image. The platform is location-based service which allows filtering listed ads based on a specific location.[10]
