Snowflake Computing is a cloud-based data-warehousing startup. It was publicly launched by Bob Muglia in 2014 after two years in stealth mode.[2][3]

History

Snowflake Computing was founded in 2012 in San Mateo, California by three data warehousing experts: Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes and Marcin Zukowski.[4] It came out of stealth mode in October 2014[5] shortly after appointing former Microsoft executive Bob Muglia as CEO that June.[2] According to IT Business Edge, much of the interest in the company is based on Muglia's involvement.[4] As of October 2015, Snowflake Computing has raised $71 million in funding, including $26 million it had raised before coming out of stealth and $45 million funding round announced in June 2015.[4][6][7] An additional $100 million was raised in April 2017, bringing total funding to $205 million.[8][9] In January 2018, they announced a $263 million investment round putting them at a $1.5 billion unicorn valuation. In October 2018, Snowflake raised another $450M in a massive round of financing raising the pre-IPO valuation to $3.5B[10]. Muglia went on to say an IPO could be in their future[11] although indicated that this could be pushed out to 2020 with the latest round of financing.

Products

Snowflake Computing sells a cloud-based data storage and analytics service called Snowflake Elastic Data Warehouse.[5][12] It allows corporate users to store and analyze data using cloud-based hardware and software.[6] The data is stored in Amazon S3.[2] According to the CEO, the software relies on the public cloud ecosystem, and isn't using Hadoop.[6] The developer was identified as a "Cool Vendor" in Gartner's Magic Quadrant and won first place at the 2015 Strata + Hadoop World startup competition.[4] It became generally available in June 2015[13][14] and had 80 organizations using it at that time.[5] As of January 2018, Snowflake is used by over 1000 organizations, including Capital One, Rent the Runway and Adobe.[11]
