Ubisoft Bucharest is a Romanian video game developer and a studio of Ubisoft based in Bucharest, Romania.
Founded in 1992, it was the company’s first production studio established outside France developing games in the Chessmaster, Silent Hunter, and H.A.W.X series.[2] It also supported other studios on the development of Assassin's Creed's multiplayer, Assassin's Creed Rogue, Just Dance, and Software:Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.[3] With a workforce that makes it Ubisoft’s second‑largest development studio worldwide, Ubisoft Bucharest plays a central role in co‑development, engineering, and quality assurance across the publisher’s global operations.
History
Beginnings (1992–2000)
Ubisoft Bucharest was founded in Bucharest in 1992[2], initially as a small studio, consisting of a few talented programmers and artists. The first projects were modest, focusing on educational games and small-scale titles for PC platforms. During this time, the team gained valuable experience and began to form a reputation for quality and innovation.
Expansion and growth (2000–2010)
Starting in 2000, Ubisoft Bucharest experienced rapid expansion. The studio began working on larger and more complex titles, including collaborations with other Ubisoft studios around the world. This decade marked the launch of popular games such as Silent Hunter III, a submarine simulator series highly acclaimed by critics and gamers. In addition, Ubisoft Bucharest played a crucial role in the development of successful franchises such as Assassin's Creed and Tom Clancy's HAWX.[4]
Consolidation of position (2010–present)
Over the past decade, Ubisoft Bucharest has solidified its position as a center of excellence within the global Ubisoft network. The studio has continued to contribute to the development of major titles such as Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs and The Division.[4] The team in Romania has also been involved in the development and optimization of game technologies, including graphics engines and development tools. In recent years, Ubisoft Bucharest has increasingly functioned as a co-development studio, working alongside other Ubisoft studios on AAA projects. In this role, it contributes to various aspects of production, including gameplay systems, content creation, and technical support across multiple titles.
