Vibrent Health is a technology company that specializes in health data.[1][2] It is known for providing the technology in the All of Us Research Program, a precision medicine initiative from the National Institutes of Health[3] that the New York Times called “one of the most ambitious medical projects ever envisioned.”[4]

Origin

Vibrent Health was founded in 2009[5] by Praduman Jain,[6][7] a former telecommunications executive at Sprint Nextel, AOL, and Time Warner Cable.[8] Jain is Vibrent’s CEO and a principal investigator for the National Institutes of Health’s All of Us program.[9]

The company’s initial funding came from Jain and grants from the Small Business Innovation Research program,[10] to study how patients process information about their health.[11]

For its first five years, the company worked with the National Cancer Institute.[12]

Vibrent is based in Fairfax, Virginia.[13]

Products

Vibrent’s technology is used by research organizations working with large data sets.[14] Its platforms facilitate the recruiting and participation of patients, as well as the collection and analysis of their data.[15]

Vibrent collects data from multiple sources, including electronic health records, genome analyses, lab results, self-reported surveys, and wearable tech.[16][17]

Its customers include government agencies and businesses in the public health market.[18]

Products

All of Us

Vibrent has won several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the All of Us Research Program, which aims to sequence genomes and other health data for 1 million people.[19] Vibrent’s grants include $74 million in 2016[20] and $39 million in 2020.[21] For all All of Us grantees, Congress has authorized $1.5 billion over a decade.[22]

As the technology lead for All of Us,[23] Vibrent provides the platform (in this case, its Learning Health System)[24] for NIH to recruit and enroll participants and collect their data.[25]

COVID-CARE

In 2021, with funding from the National Institutes of Health, Vibrent started COVID-CARE, a program to screen for, test for, and trace COVID-19.[26] COVID-CARE uses Vibrent’s Digital Health Solutions Platform, which asks a series of questions about symptoms, location, and demographics.[27] A user responds using an app or website, and the software determines the likelihood that the user has the disease.[28] If the likelihood is high, the user is mailed a rapid antigen test.[29]

All of Maryland

In 2021, Vibrent began working with the University of Maryland School of Medicine to create the All of Maryland Precision Health Initiative, one of the first statewide uses of a digital platform for research into personalized medicine.[30] All of Maryland, which uses Vibrent’s Digital Health Solutions Platform, aims to enroll up to 250,000 volunteers across the state, especially from underserved populations who experience significant health disparities.[31][32]

CovidSmart

In 2021, together with George Mason University and the Eastern Virginia Medical School, Vibrent started CovidSmart, a national study looking at how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected diverse populations.[33] The study consists of online surveys that ask participants about their financial, mental, and physical well-being.[34] According to WAVY-TV, CovidSmart is different from other COVID-19-related in that it will give back to participants aggregate, de-identified data.[35]

Million Health Discoveries

In 2022, the Mount Sinai Health System began using Vibrent’s platform in one of the largest private-sector studies to sequence the human genome.[36][37][38] The Mount Sinai Million Health Discoveries Program aims to recruit one million patients per year, primarily from New York City,[39] for five years.[40][41] The sequencing is performed by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, and the goal is to find treatments for illnesses ranging from schizophrenia to kidney disease.[42]
