Dacia Jogger (passenger version)[1]

The Dacia Dokker is a panel van and leisure activity vehicle (LAV) produced by Dacia at the Renault plant in Tangier, Morocco. The model was unveiled at the 2012 Casablanca Auto Show and was first introduced to the Moroccan market in June 2012.[2] Sales in Romania began in September 2012,[3] after which it was marketed across Europe, North Africa, Turkey, Israel and the French overseas territories.[4]

The Dokker was offered in both passenger and panel van configurations,[5] alongside the crossover-inspired Dokker Stepway, which debuted at the 2012 Istanbul Motor Show.[6] The Stepway version adopted exterior styling cues similar to those of the Sandero Stepway.[7][8]

Depending on the market, the model was sold under different brand names. In the CIS countries and the Middle East, it was marketed as the Renault Dokker, while in Latin America and Algeria it was sold as the Renault Kangoo. This branding strategy avoided direct competition with the French-built Renault Kangoo in markets where both vehicles were available. In 2018, Dacia Italia, in cooperation with the Focaccia Group, introduced a pick-up conversion of the Dokker for the Italian market.

In 2020, the Moroccan-built Dokker underwent a facelift and was reintroduced as the Renault Express, replacing both the Dacia Dokker and Renault Dokker.

First generation (F67; 2012)

The first-generation Dokker shares its front-end design with the Dacia Lodgy. According to Dacia, the name Dokker is derived from the term dock worker, reflecting the model's emphasis on practicality, load-carrying capability, modularity and durability.[9]

The passenger version seats five occupants and provides a luggage compartment with a capacity of 800 litres (28 cu ft). With the rear seats in place, the maximum loading length is 1.16 m (3.8 ft). A single sliding side door is fitted as standard, while a second sliding door is available as an option. The asymmetrically split rear bench can be folded forward against the front seats, increasing cargo volume to 3,000 litres (110 cu ft) and extending the loading length to 1.57 m (5.2 ft).[9]

The panel van variant offers a cargo capacity of 3,300 litres (120 cu ft) with a maximum loading length of 1.90 m (6.2 ft). Its foldable front passenger seat can be tipped forward against the glove compartment, extending the loading length to 2.42 m (7.9 ft). When the passenger seat is removed entirely, cargo volume increases to 3,900 litres (140 cu ft), while the maximum loading length reaches 3.11 m (10.2 ft).[9]

The Dokker has a maximum payload of 750 kg (1,653 lb). A second sliding side door was available as an option, while the asymmetrical rear doors could be opened to either 90 or 180 degrees for improved loading access.[9]

Optional equipment included the Media Nav infotainment system with integrated navigation, audio functions, Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, USB and auxiliary inputs. Other available features included cruise control and rear parking sensors.[9]

Argentina

A revised version of the Dokker has been manufactured in Argentina and marketed as the Renault Kangoo. It entered the market in 2018 as the successor to the first-generation Renault Kangoo utility vehicle,[10][11] while the passenger version followed in May of the same year.[12] The model was introduced to the Mexican market in 2019[13] and has also been exported to several Latin American countries, including Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia. Exports to Algeria commenced in July 2023.[14]

By 2015, approximately 40% of the Kangoo's components were sourced from Argentine suppliers.[15]

Safety

The Dokker was equipped with front ventilated disc brakes.[20]

Standard safety equipment included an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD). Electronic stability control (ESC) was available on selected versions. The vehicle was also fitted with front airbags for the driver and front passenger, while head and thorax side airbags were offered depending on the market and specification.[9]

In 2019, the entry-level Latin American specification of the Renault Kangoo, equipped with two airbags and ESC, received a three-star rating for adult occupant protection and a four-star rating for child occupant protection under the Latin NCAP 2.0 assessment protocol.[21]

Dacia Dokker

The second generation of the Dacia Dokker was introduced in 2021 under the Renault Express nameplate, replacing the Dacia-branded model in a number of markets.[22][23] Following the introduction of the General Safety Regulation (GSR) in 2024, Renault withdrew the Express from the European market because the model did not meet the new mandatory safety requirements.[24]

The Renault Express is directly derived from the Dacia Dokker,[25] retaining the B0/M0 platform, body structure and sliding side doors. The exterior was redesigned with a new front fascia incorporating a revised bonnet, front wings, grille and bumper in line with Renault's contemporary styling language, while redesigned rear doors complemented the updated appearance. The cabin, chassis and the majority of the mechanical and structural components remained largely unchanged from the Dokker.[26]

History

Renault unveiled the third-generation Renault Kangoo in November 2020 and simultaneously announced the return of the Express name for a new light commercial vehicle positioned below the Kangoo Van as a more affordable alternative. The Express nameplate had previously been discontinued in 2002.

For the new model, Renault extensively updated the existing Dacia Dokker. The front end was redesigned with a new bumper, slimmer headlights and a larger centrally positioned Renault emblem, giving the vehicle a family resemblance to the brand's contemporary passenger cars. The interior also received a redesigned dashboard with storage compartments providing a combined capacity of 48 litres, together with an optional 8-inch Easy Link infotainment system.[27]

Available equipment included a wireless smartphone charger integrated into the centre armrest, three USB ports, four 12-volt power outlets, a rear-view camera and a blind-spot monitoring system.[28] Other exterior revisions included redesigned LED taillights and new door handles, although the overall body shell, proportions and most exterior pressings remained unchanged from the Dokker.[29]

Discontinuation

In July 2024, Renault discontinued the Express Van in the European Union following the introduction of new safety regulations that required additional electronic driver assistance systems. Given the model's relatively low sales volume and budget positioning, Renault determined that the investment needed to comply with the new regulations was not economically viable, resulting in the vehicle's withdrawal from the European market.[30]

Engines

The panel van was powered by either a 1.3-litre petrol engine producing 75 kW (102 PS) or a 1.5-litre diesel engine available with either 55 kW (75 PS) or 70 kW (95 PS). The least powerful engine was also offered in an ECO-Leader variant, in which the top speed was limited to 100 km/h to reduce fuel consumption.[31]
