|} Infoglobal I-22 Sikatan is an Indonesian 4.5th generation Multirole combat aircraft development program carried out by PT. Infoglobal Teknologi Semesta.[1] The fighter aircraft itself will be designed as a twin-engine, twin-seat light fighter aircraft, with modern Avionics and high-performance features, to fulfill its important role as a modern pilot training facility through its best performance. A mockup of this fighter jet was also displayed at the outdoor arena of the Indo Defence Expo & Forum 2022 at booth OD 60, which was held at JIExpo Kemayoran on November 2–5, 2022.[2]

The I-22 Sikatan is the second fighter aircraft development program undertaken by Indonesia. Previously, Indonesia, more precisely National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (formerly LAPAN), had developed a fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter aircraft called the LAPAN Fighter Experimental (LFX).[3] in 2012, the program was then frozen in 2013 until now without any clarity regarding LFX.

Naming system

The letter "I" in the name of the aircraft is taken from the name of the manufacturing company, namely Infoglobal, and the number "22" indicates the year 2022 when the mock-up of this aircraft was first introduced at the Indo Defence Expo & Forum event.[4]

Meanwhile, the name Sikatan is taken from the name of a species of Brush-headed Bulbul bird which is spread across several Southeast Asia countries. This bird is renowned for its agility in flight. The name "Sikatan" was given to the I-22 aircraft in the hope that it would eventually be able to fly as agilely as the Brush Bird or Sikatan bird in the wild.[4]

This is different from America and China, where the names of their aircraft use letter prefixes to indicate the function of the aircraft,[5][6] I-22 actually uses the name of the manufacturing company as the initial letter. This naming system is the same as that used by Russia for their aircraft.[7]

For example, the letters SU on the Sukhoi Su-57 aircraft indicate the company that manufactured the aircraft, namely Sukhoi. This applies to almost all Russian aircraft,[7] such as TU for Tupolev, MIG for Mikoyan, Il for Ilyushin and many more. In contrast to America and China, whose initial letters indicate the function of the aircraft, such as F for Fighter, J for Jianjiji (fighter), B for Bomber, H for Hongzhaji (bomber), and others.[6]

However, this does not mean that all fighter aircraft made in Indonesia will use this naming system. remembering that the name I-22 Sikatan was not given by the government, but by the Infoglobal company itself.

Design

The design concept for the I-22 Sikatan was developed in collaboration with local aerospace design firm Vimana Litbang & Rekayasa, which is headed by former commercial unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pilot, Sunanto Adjidarmo.

[8][9] At the exhibition, Sunanto explained the i-22 Sikatan as a twin-engine fighter aircraft concept with a design inspired by the Saab JAS 39 Gripen. It features a reduced radar cross-section design and uses mostly composite materials to enhance its stealth characteristics, he added.

The I-22 Sikatan has compact dimensions with a length of 12.5 meters, a wingspan of 7 meters, and a height of 3.5 meters. This aircraft was deliberately designed with a small size because it will be used as a main fighter aircraft and can be used for long-distance patrols.[10]

The concept has two variants – one with a canard wing configuration, and one without. The canard wing configuration has a wingspan of 9 meters, while the one without canards has a wingspan of 9.6 meters. Both concepts were designed entirely domestically by local aerospace engineers.[11]

The mock-up on display at Indo Defence 2022 is a canard-less variant, and is built at approximately 90% of the original size to facilitate shipping arrangements and is still a rough mock-up, adopting stealth character with low radar image and using composite materials.

Development

The development program will be implemented in three phases. In the first phase, the aircraft will be developed as a training aircraft.[12]

The second phase will be a demonstration phase. Then, the final phase will be a full system.[13] Infoglobal has initiated the i-22 Brush Program with the aim of mastering fighter aircraft technology and targeting market potential by utilizing its experience and skills in system design/production system cost-effective aircraft.

At the Indo Defence Expo & Forum 2022 held at JIExpo Kemayoran on November 2–5, 2022, PT. Infoglobal introduced a mockup of the I-22 Sikatan fighter jet for the first time at the outdoor booth OD 60.[2] The mock-up on display is the canard-less variant, and is made at about 90% of the original size to facilitate shipping arrangements and is still a rough mock-up.

At the Indo Defence 2024 event held on June 11–14, 2025, PT Infoglobal presented the latest developments of the i-22 Sikatan program, including a full-scale cockpit model and a flight simulator. This presence continues the company's participation in the biennial exhibition, after previously also showing off smaller scale models and versions in 2022.[14]

The I-22 Sikatan Demonstrator on display demonstrates advances in fighter aircraft technology development, including a modern cockpit design. This aircraft is equipped with a fly-by-wire feature, where the flight control or flight control system works electronically via a joystick and throttle.[15]

Most of the avionics configuration is integrated into a single "25" panoramic display. This screen displays various data displayed, starting from the CNI System, Map-based navigation, Fuel & Engine Monitoring System, Integrated Caution and Warning System (ICAWS), to the Weapon System. The I-22 Sikatan is also equipped with IESD as a backup flight instrument, as well as a day/night mode feature for aircraft operations in low-light environments or at night.[16]

Not only in the cockpit, the i-22 Sikatan is also equipped with a Helmet Mounted Display System (HMDS) which allows important flight data to be projected directly onto the pilot's retina via a display on the helmet thus increasing the pilot's situational awareness during combat missions or non-combat missions.

Controversies

Third Prototype of KF-21 Boramae.

The I-22 Sikatan is often viewed negatively, especially by South Korean and Chinese military observers. The I-22 Sikatan's design is often seen as similar to South Korea KF-21 Boramae and China J-20. Even some South Korean military observers suspect that someone leaked the core technology of the KF-21 to Indonesia because the timing of the introduction of the I-22 was too 'coincidental' amidst the arrears of the Indonesia is in arrears on Indonesia's debt in the KF-21 project and suspects that Indonesia will withdraw from the KF-21 project with accusations of stealing KF-21 data, although this has been denied by Indonesia itself.

However, this is different from the facts on the ground because most Korean people do not know about the existence of the I-22 Sikatan.

J-20 Mighty Dragon made by China

Although the truth of this cannot be confirmed, several Chinese military observers have also accused Indonesia of plagiarizing the design of the J-20 fighter jet.[17] Even though Infoglobal CEO himself said that the I-22 design was inspired by the Jas-39 Gripen, but it cannot be denied that the I-22 design is very similar to the J-20..

  • The I-22 Sikatan will be developed in three phases: training aircraft, demonstrator aircraft, and full system fighter aircraft.
  • If this aircraft is successful, it will be the first locally made fighter aircraft to be operated by Indonesia if the Indonesian government is interested in purchasing it.
  • Some sources state that this aircraft is very likely to be developed into a 5th generation in addition to a 4.5 generation, but Infoglobal states that it is necessary to wait for further information if the aircraft is physically introduced and live demonstration
