Short description: Standards for automated test based upon VMEbus

The basic architecture of the instrument system is described in US patent 4,707,834.[1] This patent was freely licensed by Tektronix to the VXIbus Consortium. The VXIbus grew from the VME bus specification, it was established in 1987 by Hewlett Packard (now Keysight Technologies[2]), Racal Instruments (now Astronics Test Systems), Colorado Data Systems, Wavetek and Tektronix. VXI was promoted by the VXIbus Consortium, whose sponsor members were (as of 2009[update]) Astronics Test Systems (formerly Racal Instruments), Bustec, Keysight Technologies, National Instruments, Teradyne, and VTI Instruments (formerly known as VXI Technology).[3]
