6th Annual Green Economics Conference at Mansfield College, Oxford University

The Green Economics Institute was founded in the United Kingdom in 2004 and has grown into one of the largest green research centres in the world.[1][2] It is an international non-governmental, non-profit organisation which operates in 47 different countries, leading a global movement for change through green economics.[1][2][3] It is operated by a core team of 20 economists and researchers, including Miriam Kennet and Volker Heinemann,[4] and directs a network of 5000 professionals on whose work it can draw for specialist inputs into bids and projects.[1] It publishes an international networking magazine, The Green Economist. The Institute also offers training programmes and examinations to obtain a Masters in Green Economics,[5] and runs a large international internships programme during the summer.[6][7][8] Its central offices are based in Reading, Berkshire.[9]

Green Economics

As defined by the Green Economics Institute, green economics is "Progressive Economics, reclaiming economics for all people everywhere - women, nature, other species, the planet and its systems".[9][10][11]

Green Economics Institute Founder and CEO Miriam Kennet describes green economics as:

Green Economics is the green movement's challenge to mainstream orthodoxy in economics and it is gaining ground globally and in the corridors of power as the best alternative to solving climate change, the credit crunch, poverty and biodiversity losses. It is about providing reclaiming the practices and policies of economics, for all people everywhere, nature, other species, the planet and its systems. It is about provisioning for the needs, impacts, effects and responsibilities, for everyone and everything on the planet.

Founders

An interactive Green Economics workshop in Petersfield, July 2011

The Green Economics Institute was founded by Miriam Kennet and Volker Heinemann in 2004.

Miriam Kennet, co-founder, director and CEO, received an MAIB in Economics and International Business from South Bank University, and most recently an MSC in Environmental Science and Economics from the University of Oxford. She has researched into environmental economics at South Bank University, Oxford University, and Keele University.[12][13]

Volker Heinemann, co-founder and director of the Institute, holds a master's degree in Economics. He is a former German Green Councillor and is currently an associate editor of the International Journal of Green Economics[14] He is author of Die Oekonomie der Zukunft, a book that investigates future economic trends in the developed world. It is based on the idea that a new economic science, free from any neo-liberal or other normative bias is needed: green economics.[4]

Michelle Gale (USA) is our current Non Executive Director and has been in post for 10 years. She heads up our COP UNFCC Climate Delegations Diplomacy and also is the co -author and editor of many of our books. She is a specialist in International Relations, and Economics and Human Rights Law and gender issues.

Professor Maria Madi (Brazil) heads up our academic work at the www.geiacademy.org. [15]. She is a specialist and Professor of international finance.

The Green Economics Institute Trust The Green Economics Institute Trust, greeneconomicsinstitutetrust.org, is a Registered Charity No 111768 (Ref: The Charities Commission) which was founded in 2009 by Judith Felton with founding trustees, Jacob Sanders, Miriam Kennet, Volker Heinemann and others. Its board of trustees is very active and holds regular Exhibition Stands roughly one a month around Europe to advise people what they can do to implement our research and ideas. The Charity spreads its ideas by educating the public in all aspects of Green Economics and Social and Environmental Justice, in particular it shared the offices with Launchpad a charity for the homeless, and also with the Ethical Property Company.

Social Justice It has supported the publication of numerous books on aspects of social justice, for Example The Philosophy of Social Justice which was very popular at the Paris UNFCC COP21 Climate Conference showing the link between social justice, diversity and solving climate change issues. It also publishes regularly on climate change and supports the publication of books on the green economy.

Changing the Narrative of Migration The Trust has also been active in the migration debate- promoting the idea of Changing the Narrative of Migration with 4 conferences on the subject and academic papers and a book ISBN:9781907543210[16] discussing other ways of looking at migration and its true history, believing that xenophobia and intolerance are contrary to the introduction of a green economy. More information about the Green Economics Institute Trust can be found at its website www.greeneconomicsinstitutetrust.org [17]. Its email is [18] greeneconomicsinstitutetrust.org.

Mental Health and Sustainability The Trust is also very active in promoting mental health as a very important factor in understanding the human difficulty in changing track and stopping runnaway climate change, pollution and a range of difficult subjects. It works with a range of top pyschiatrists and many of them inform the profession and government on this issue. We have also published a book on Health, The Greening of Health and Healthcare, which has been very influential not least being used by Chinese government official when planning the next phase of health developments in China. Law: Whose Law is it anyway? The Trust is very active in philosophy and the law internationally, working with many partner lawyers. It is currently engaged in a round of lectures, talking about how many of the worlds worst ever atrocities have been committed under the cover of the ruling laws or governments so that victims have no recourse to law whilst this has taken place. We are advising people to consider, who is the law for and who does it protect, and who has access to it. It is necessary to sort this out if we are considering the role of the commons, and the rights of ordinary people to access ordinary resources, water for example, so Whose Law is it anyway? is a major project developing at the institute led by Maria Fernanda Madi (Brazil and the Netherlands).

Diversity The Trust has always promoted diversity in all its activities, publications and events, as well as acting as a beacon for others. It is currently advising several other Institutions on how to achieve and maintain real diversity in organisations as a means of ensuring social and environmental justice.

'Chair of Trustees' is Marlyn Lee - Hughes, more information can be found at: greeneconomicsinstitutetrust.org. She is a specialist in both science, trained at Edinburgh and a lecturer in English. Mrs Hughes runs our Registered Charity The Green Economics Institute Trust and its work in 'Educating the Public in all aspects of Green Economics and Social and Environmental Justice.
