In August 2025, the parents of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old boy who died by suicide in April 2025, sued OpenAI and its chief executive Sam Altman in the Superior Court of California alleging that ChatGPT contributed to their son's suicide.[1][2][3]

ChatGPT gave Adam Raine advice for how to kill himself and offered to help him write his suicide note.[4] His parents said that while Adam was looking for a friend, he found a suicide coach.

The case has sparked widespread debate about the safety of conversational AI, particularly for vulnerable users such as teenagers with mental health issues.[5] OpenAI has announced improvements to its safety measures in response to the lawsuit.[6][7]
