Beverly Hills Cop is a first-person shooter video game based on the film series of the same name. It was developed by Atomic Planet Entertainment,[1] published by Blast! Entertainment, and released exclusively in Europe for the PlayStation 2 in 2006.[2]
In the game, players take on the role of Axel Foley across six levels, all set in Los Angeles .[3] Players are required to use a mixture of sneaking and shooting in order to achieve their objectives. Similar to the film series, players can also talk their way out of situations with wise-cracking dialogue and avoid gunfights.[3]
Despite playing as Axel Foley from the film series, Eddie Murphy's likeness was not licensed for the game.[4]
Reception
Jeff Gerstmann of Giant Bomb referred to Beverly Hills Cop as "the 9/11 of video games".[3] Zach Ames of smosh.com listed Beverly Hills Cop at #2 on his list "5 Video Games Based On Movies That Make No Sense". He criticized Axel Foley for not using Eddie Murphy's likeness in the game.[5]
In 2016 article for What Culture, Padraig Cotter said the game was "poorly designed mess, with horrible stealth sections you can fail for no clear reason, appalling AI, a paltry number of levels and fiddly shooting mechanics."[6]
