DoomZ is a demake of the survival video game DayZ that was developed by Robert Prest in the Doom engine.[1] Its stated goal was to create a version of DayZ in a more stable engine without the glitches that plagued the original game. As of 2017, it is still in development and has reached the alpha phase.[2]

Gameplay

As DoomZ is a remake, it attempts to carry over all features from the original game, including a day and night cycle, animals, a food system and broken limbs.[1] Unlike the original game, precision aiming is not possible, giving the game a more desperate feel.[3]

Development

According to the creator of the mod, it was his first time using the Zdoom feature.[4] The goal is to make the game as close to DayZ as possible, although due to the limitations of the game engine, vehicles cannot be included.[5]

Reception

DoomZ received positive reception from critics, with Alec Meer of Rock, Paper, Shotgun calling the game "fascinating" due to how different it is from Doom, with limited ammunition and "silent starkness".[3] He commented that the statement "night is coming" in DoomZ held "much more terror" than in DayZ.[3]

Andras Neltz of Kotaku called the amount of progress made on the mod "admirable" despite noting that "the guy's clearly not an artist" with regards to the crude and unfinished state of the user interface.[1] Shaun Prescott of PCGamer called the unfinished UI "rather charming" and said the game itself "warmed [his] cold, cynical heart".[5]
