In July 15, 2020 Africa’s biggest telco, MTN Nigeria, became the first mobile telecoms operator to introduce the eSIM (embedded SIM) service in West Africa. It's estimated that by 2030, 1bn subscribers will be connected across Sub-Sahara Africa.

An eSIM (which stands for embedded SIM) which is a SIM card that is directly embedded in the phone’s motherboard and does not require a SIM slot like the traditional SIM cards such as micro or nano SIMs.

With this type SIM, the subscribers can get flexible access to multiple mobile networks without physically changing the SIM card or queuing to retrieve SIM or upgrade

With eSIM, Africa stand the chance to checkmate mobile theft, use portable and super smart devices, switch easily on different networks in different countries, foster seamless trades (#afcfta) in the Continent, develop IoT industry and increase healthy competition among service provider thereby reducing international roaming charges.
