The map based integration platform JMap was created in 1995 by the Quebec company K2 Geospatial, formerly KHEOPS Technologies.

Product History

JMap is a map based integration platform designed to connect, consolidate and publish data often managed and stored in silos in different systems. The platform provides interfaces accessible to executives, GIS (Geographic Information System) analysts and non-technical users in order to collaborate, analyze, decide and act in real time. JMap allows the integration of many databases with different formats and their georeferencing on different cartographic supports. Intended to make complex information systems compatible, the tool facilitates their exploitation, analysis and decision making in various contexts such as land management, infrastructures and human safety[1]. JMap provides users with a series of GIS tools available in desktop, web or mobile applications[2].

Software Evolution

Versions

The first version of JMap, JMap 1.0, is launched in 2000. It introduces the JMap Desktop application and JMap Admin in Desktop version. The JMap 2.6 version then allows users to access the offline mode in JMap Desktop and to get LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) support[3]. Between 2008 and 2017, six new versions of JMap were released. Indeed, with JMap 3.0 to 7.0[4][5], several elements of improvements are added to the platform. Here are some of them:

It is from November 2017 that the upcoming version naming is changed. The platform evolution speed does not slow down and the versions are released closer together to avoid the risks of massive upgrades. Moreover, the K2 Geospatial team wants to build on the JMap version 7 rather than making major changes to the platform and its applications. Thus, the evolution of the platform and its applications is done through a unique digital infrastructure. This is why the new versions of JMap 7 are identified by the names of the world capitals in alphabetical order. Thus, the release of JMap 7 Amsterdam starts the ball rolling. From February 2018 to December 2021, ten new versions of JMap 7 are released - Bogota, Cairo, Dakar, Edinburgh, Funafuti, Gibraltar, Hanoi, Istanbul, Jakarta, Kathmandu. The major changes and improvements of these are:

  • Access to statistics on layer and project usage
  • GML 3 support
  • Nested subforms
  • Form validation rules
  • Calculated form fields
  • Enterprise Geodatabase 10.X support
  • Photo layers and 360° photos
  • SSO (SAML and OpenID Connect)
  • Availability of a Docker Image for JMap Server
  • MongoDB data sources
  • Support of the OGC API standard - Features

JMap Pro

Intended for technical users and GIS analysts, JMap Pro displays geospatial data in a cartographic interface. The application's multiple GIS tools allow for in-depth and technical analysis[6]. JMap Pro connects to JMap Server to provide users with an interactive tool for map navigation, analysis and editing of both vector and raster data. JMap Pro runs on a private network or on the web and can be launched in stand-alone mode or in a web browser. The application is used, for example, to disseminate map data to an organization's staff by accessing a powerful and easy-to-use tool. Several Quebec cities, including Montreal, Saguenay, Saint-Jacques and Trois-Rivières, are among the organizations that have used JMap Pro in this way[7][8][9][10]. Finally, it is possible to include JMap extensions in JMap Pro to extend the software's functionalities[11].

JMap NG

JMap NG (new generation) was created by K2 Geospatial following the release of the Jakarta version of JMap 7. The new generation of web applications for project visualization is developed using new and powerful software components. JMap NG offers a significant interactivity and a fluid navigation thanks to the use of vector tiles produced by JMap Server from user data. Finally, JMap NG offers the usual cartographic tools (measurement, selection, search, annotations, export, etc.) in addition to allowing the display of extruded 3D data when elevation is available on the polygons[12].

JMap Survey

JMap Survey runs on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. The application allows for the display of vector and raster data from a JMap project, data querying and editing of vector data in both connected and disconnected modes. These features allow users to use it for data entry in the field while working.

Additional extensions

JMap extensions allow the platform to evolve according to the reality and the needs of the users. Extensions allow the integration of new functionalities to JMap in a modular and transparent way. K2 Geospatial is responsible for the development of the extensions listed below. However, it is possible for users to design extensions to meet specific requirements. The ones presented below are only a part of the complementary extensions available to users.

Documents

Documents improves the search for documentary information. The extension connects JMap to records management systems and databases. Documents allows access to all the digital documentation of a user in order to speed up information searches[13].

Imagery

Imagery extension provides a set of tools for the analysis of raster data, including digital terrain models (DTM) and multispectral images. This allows users to increase the knowledge of their territory with their imagery data[13].

Facility Management

Developed by Visiativ, one of K2 Geospatial's partners, Facility Management extension offers to optimize the management of real estate space by providing access to detailed plans of each floor, infrastructure and equipment installed[13].

Tracking

Tracking extension allows the optimization of the productivity of users' mobile units and reduces operating costs. In other words, Tracking supports real-time and delayed management and tracking of mobile units by connecting vehicle tracking systems[13].

Software Interface

The software interface varies depending on the application used. Here are some examples.

JMap Admin is a web-based administration interface of JMap Server, used to connect data and create mapping projects.

JMap NG takes the form of a web interface to visualize JMap cartographic projects.
