Kentico is a proprietary content management system (CMS) developed by Kentico Software, based in Brno, Czech Republic.[2][3]

History

Kentico Software was founded in 2004 by Petr Palas, who wanted to create an affordable .NET-based content management system (CMS).[4] Its first customer was Gibson Musical Instruments company (and its associated website gibson.com), six months later.[4] Other companies were not interested at the time, citing high levels of competition in the web hosting space.[4]

In 2008, Kentico opened its first international office in the United States.[4]

Kentico was included in Deloitte's 2009 Technology Fast 50 Central Europe list of companies based on revenue growth.[5]

Kentico opened an office in Berkshire, United Kingdom in April 2011.[6] The following year, Kentico opened an office in Australia to cover the Asia-Pacific region.[7] Then in 2015, Kentico expanded into the Benelux region through a new office in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[8]

In 2016, Kentico created a new product for headless content management systems called Kentico Cloud,[9][10] which was renamed Kontent by Kentico in 2020.[11] Kentico reported a revenue of CZK 412 million with a profit of 22 million in 2016.[9]

Kentico partnered with Ucommerce in 2017, a .NET e-commerce platform, integrating its features into Kentico 11.[12]

Kentico expanded into Turkey in 2018.[13] In the same year, Kentico reported a revenue of CZK 473 million with a profit exceeding CZK 85 million.[14]

In 2022, the London-based Expedition Growth Capital fund invested CZK 1.5 billion in the company.[15] Following the investment, Kentico CMS and Kontent by Kentico were separated into independent companies.[16][17] Kentico Software continued to maintain Kentico CMS under a new name Kentico Xperience, and Kontent by Kentico was rebranded to Kontent.ai.[18]

Following a rewrite in 2023, the platform was rebranded as Xperience by Kentico.[19][20] The new version supported multiple channels (including websites and email).[19]

As of 2024, Kentico reported more than 90,000 websites using its software and a global network of 500 partner agencies.[20]

Leadership

Petr Palas was the company's CEO from its founding in 2004 until 2022.[3] Dominik Pinter was appointed CEO of Kentico Software in July 2022.[21]

Technology

Kentico is built on ASP.NET Core and uses Microsoft SQL Server for database storage.[22] The admin site is built as a single-page application (SPA) using ReactJS.[23] The platform can be hosted on-premises or through cloud providers such as Microsoft Azure.[24][25]

Community

Starting in 2009,[26] Kentico has held an annual, "Site of the Year" competition to recognize websites built on its platform.[27][28]

Since 2010, Kentico has hosted an annual partner conference called Kentico Connection.[29] The conference has taken place in locations across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific[citation needed] and focuses on market trends, product roadmap discussions, licensing, and partner program changes.[30][31]

The company launched rewards programs for professionals and community members in 2010 and 2025.[32][33][34] Kentico employees are not eligible for the awards.[34]

Reception

In 2025, Kentico was included as a Niche Player in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms.[citation needed] CX Today stated that Niche Players are vendors that find success in specific industries, company sizes, or geographic segments, but may lag behind Leaders in terms of broader capabilities, execution, or vision.[35]

In 2024, Kentico was listed as a Leader in G2's Grid® Report for Digital Experience Platforms (DXP).[36] According to HG Insights, G2's Leader status is a vendor that has scored highly for customer satisfaction and market impact.[37]
