MeisterTask is a cloud-based Kanban-style collaborative task-management application.[2] It was launched in 2015 by MeisterLabs GmbH,[3] a software company that developed the online mind mapping tool MindMeister. The company has headquarters in Vienna and operates offices in Munich[4][5] and Seattle.[6][7]

Development

MeisterTask was created by MeisterLabs, a Germany software company, founded by Michael Hollauf[8] and Till Vollmer in 2006.[3][9] The idea of the product was developed after the company received customer requests to improve the task management features in MindMeister.[10] The solution was intended to help users shift from brainstorming to agile execution of their projects.[3][5][11]

The software development lasted two years and cost nearly €1.5 million ($1.7 million) with no external funds engaged and most of the funding coming from MindMeister revenue.[12][13]

A few months after its release in 2015, MeisterTask reached 100,000 users.[12] The same year, the company launched a free MeisterTask mobile app for iPhone and iPad.[3][11]

In 2016, MeisterTask reached one million registered users. Also in 2016, the company opened its first United States office.[5][14]

As of 2018, MeisterTask had over 2 million users.[15]

Product

MeisterTask is a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)[13] product that enables users to organize and manage projects and tasks. Communication and remote collaboration are produced through the web- and app-based interfaces, allowing team-members organize and automate workflow, discuss and assign tasks, add due dates,[16] and track progress on customizable project boards in real-time.[3][17][18]

MeisterTask utilizes Kanban boards,[18] sharing similarities with such applications as Trello and Asana.[2]

The software can be used in a web-browser, or through applications for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android.[19][20] It adopts a freemium model, with a free basic version offering limited functionality and a paid version that provides additional features.

The program has integrations with other tools, including GitHub, Microsoft Teams, Zendesk, Google Drive, Slack, Dropbox, IFTTT, iCalendar, Harvest, and Zapier.[2][21][22]

Among the software's customers are Virgin Hyperloop One,[23] Nokia, BMW, SAP, Oracle, CNN, and Vodafone.[7]

Technology

MeisterTask operates on Ruby on Rails on the backend, while the frontend works on React and Redux.[24]

Reception

The software was listed among the "Best Apps 2015" by Google and iOS App Store,[25][14][26] and among the best applications in its category by WIRED[27] and Zapier.[6] It was also included into Capterra's Top 20 Project Management Software list.[28]

In 2017, MeisterTask received the Best Apps for Teaching & Learning award by the American Library Association.[29][30]
