RumX is a social network and mobile phone application that allows its users to record rum tasting impressions in a structured way and share them with the community.[1]

RumX provides a platform where users can view background information and flavor profiles of rums. The backbone of the platform is the largest rum database in the world with 9529 rums, which is built by the community. Based on the taste impressions of the community, similar rums are identified and personalized recommendations are generated.

From May 2020, the database has been expanded to include barcodes so that bottles can be scanned via the app. In addition, independent bottlers place QR codes on their bottles to provide RumX background information to their buyers. [2][3]

The platform also allows users to digitize their rum collections. In this way, statistics on the distribution of bottles by origin and style, as well as purchasing behavior are visualized.[4]

Database

RumX offers the largest um database in the world, accessible via iOS and Android as well as on the web. Currently 9529 rums from 89 countries, 597 distilleries and 646 independent bottlers are listed. The unique aspect of the database is the listing of a large number of single cask bottlings.[5][6]

In addition to general information about the rum, such as distillery, alcohol by volume and style, the database also contains specific information about the production process. It is indicated from which raw material (sugarcane juice, molasses) a rum was produced and with which distillation method (column still, pot still) it was distilled.[7]

Technology

Both mobile apps (iOS and Android) are implemented natively in Swift and Java, respectively. The website is based on the JAM stack and uses a Web template system, Static Site Generator to display the contents of the database. Similar rums and personalized recommendations are computed using AI algorithms singular value decomposition and k-nearest neighbors algorithm.[8]

History

RumX launched on December 18, 2018 under the name Rum Tasting Notes for the iOS platform. The Android version was released on Aug. 13, 2020. On April 04/23/2021, the platform was renamed from Rum Tasting Notes to RumX. At the same time, the database was made accessible via a website.[9]

Between September and December 2020, RumX went through the Hochschule der Medien's startup funding program "Sandbox" and won the audience award.[10]
