The Bug Genie is free and open source, web-based project management and bug tracking system. Main functionality includes bug- and issue tracking, reporting, project management, integrated wiki and integration with commonly used version control systems such as Git, Mercurial, Perforce and SVN.[3]
History
The Bug Genie was initially released as "BUGS - The Bug Genie" or simply BUGS, developed by Daniel André Eikeland, who still maintains the project. Ray Jensen joined the core team for a short period in 2004 and Philip Kent joined in late 2009. In addition to the core team, The Bug Genie is being actively contributed to by members of the community.[4]
Since the initial version 1.x the software has seen two major rewrites for each of the subsequent major releases.
Version 2.0, released to SourceForge on January 2009[5] featured improved user management, search functionality, messaging and issue reporting.
Version 3.0, released on January 31, 2011[6] also added integrated project management tools, a wiki and improved integration with external source control systems.

Technical Design
The Bug Genie is written in PHP, and stores its content in an SQL database, supporting MySQL, PostgreSQL and MSSQL out of the box. The interface makes extensive use of AJAX and uses a combination of jQuery and Prototype to provide this functionality.
In addition to this, The Bug Genie also bundles several third-party components that provides additional functionality:
- GeSHi for automatic syntax highlighting
- Swift mailer for outgoing email
- Michelf PHP markdown library for markdown syntax support
Hardware/software requirements
An installation of The Bug Genie requires:
- any web server with URL rewriting capabilities
- PHP version 5.3.0 or later
- MySQL 5.0 or greater or PostgreSQL 8.2 or greater
- the PHP gmp extension, gd extension (for statistics) and imap extension (for incoming email)

Adoption
The Bug Genie is reportedly widely used,[8] and users include organisations such as WebPlatform.org. The Bug Genie is also available to install through several automated installation systems such as Amahi and Webuzo.
