In the United States, The Operational Art of War sold 12,789 copies during 1998. These sales accounted for $555,681 in revenue that year.[3]

The Operational Art of War was named the best computer wargame of 1998 by Computer Gaming World,[2] PC Gamer US,[3] Computer Games Strategy Plus and GameSpot.[5][4] It was also nominated for IGN's "Best Strategy Game of the Year" prize, which ultimately went to StarCraft.[6] The editors of Computer Games wrote that the game "balances detail against flexibility; in our minds, it does this better than most."[4] Those of Computer Gaming World argued, "With its innovative combination of time, movement, and combat action, The Operational Art of War shows that there is still plenty of life left in serious wargames."[2]

In 1998, PC Gamer US declared The Operational Art of War the 50th-best computer game ever released, and the editors called it "nothing less than a masterpiece."[7]
