Todoist is a work management tool[1][2] developed by Doist.[3] It was created in 2007 by Amir Salihefendic as a hobby project. By 2024, it had 30 million users.

Features

Todoist tracks comments, due dates, projects, priority levels, or labels associated with tasks.[4]: 35–36  It also has reminders, goals, and appointments.[4]: 11  It can sync with the user's calendar and send the user push notification reminders based on their location.[4]: 23  Unsorted tasks are placed in an "Inbox", then in a "Today" or "Next 7 Days" view, once a due date is assigned.[4]: 25  Tasks can be added with voice commands[5] and the AI can answer questions about tasks or break them down into sub-tasks.[6][7] Todoist is available on every major device, such as tablets, desktop computers, smartphones, and wearables.[4]: 17

History

Todoist was created in 2007 by Amir Salihefendic[8] as a hobby project.[9] It was developed without any formal funding.[10] By 2012, it had 350,000 users[11] which grew to 5 million by 2015.[12] The web version of Todoist was introduced in 2012, along with HTML 5 integration and native mobile applications.[8][11] In 2013, it added the "Karma" system, which gamified the completion of tasks by rewarding users with Karma for completing tasks on time.[4]: 31 [8] In 2015, the ability to interpret sentences into recurring tasks and appointments was added.[9]

In 2016, it added "Smart Calendar," which suggests deadlines for tasks based on the user's schedule and habits.[5][13] Todoist was also rebranded that year with a new logo and changes to the user interface.[12] In 2019, Todoist Foundations was released. This release added sub-sections to projects, user interface improvements, and setup the tool for future changes.[10][14] In 2020, "Workspaces" was added for teams to collaborate on projects[3] and kanban-style "Boards" for business users.[15] It also added "Upcoming View," which shows tasks coming up that day or week.[16]

As of 2024, there were 30 million users.[3] Todoist clients are available for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux.[17]
