Prof. Vidya Jyothi Prasad Katulanda, MBBS (First Class Hons), MD, FRCP (Lon), FCCP, FACE, DPhil (Oxford), is a Sri Lankan academic, endocrinologist, and physician. He currently holds the position of Professor in Medicine and serves as the Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.[1] Additionally, he is a dedicated consultant physician and an endocrinologist at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.[2]

Education and early career

Prof. Katulanda's academic journey began from Royal college, Colombo[3] and subsequently entered faculty of medicine, University of Colombo. He completed final MBBS[4] with First Class Honors, and then acquired an MD and a FRCP[5](London). He earned a DPhil from the University of Oxford.[6]

Leadership and academic Contributions

At the University of Colombo, Prof.. Katulanda takes charge of the Diabetes Research Unit,[7] an institution, where he was instrumental for establishing in 2005.[8] His contribution to research in diabetes was recognized by the Sri Lanka Medical Association in 2009 with its SLMA oration[9] and the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine in 2008 by the PGIM oration[10]

International recognition and accomplishments

He has received with several awards, including the Vidya Jyothi[11] for his research. He is a Research Fellow at the Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford,[6] and his appointment as a Visiting Professor at the Michigan University.

Engagement in societies

He has served as the President of the Endocrine Society,[12] Secretary of the Ceylon College of Physicians,[13] and the Endocrine Society of Sri Lanka.

Innovation in healthcare

Prof. Katulanda is one of the founding members and the current chairman[14] of The Center for Diabetes Endocrinology and Cardio Metabolism (CDEM) (Pvt) Ltd.[15] CDEM is a medical facility dedicated to address spectrum of health challenges, including diabetes,[16] endocrine disorders, cardiac diseases, renal conditions, and metabolic disorders.

Clinical training

His clinical training began at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka, under the mentorship of Dr. Udul Hewage, spanning the years 2003 to 2004. Further enriching his expertise, he pursued clinical training at the distinguished Oxford Centre for Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM) in the United Kingdom from 2004 to 2008. Under the guidance of Prof. David Mathhews and Prof. John Waas, he honed his skills in the intricate field of endocrinology. Additionally, he served as a Registrar in General Medicine at the University Medical Unit of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka, working closely with Prof. Rezvi Sheriff.[17]
