Collabora Office is an open source office suite based on LibreOffice, it is developed by Collabora Productivity, who are a division of Collabora. Collabora are a commercial partner with LibreOffice's parent organisation The Document Foundation (TDF). The TDF state that most software development work on LibreOffice is by its commercial partners that includes Collabora, Red Hat and CIB/Allotropia, they encourage working with its commercial partners for enterprise-class deployments, to benefit from long-term support, technical support, custom new features, and Service Level Agreements (SLA)s.[2]

Features

The Collabora Office suites of desktop and mobile applications all run cross platform LibreOffice core software, they are available for all major desktop operating systems and mobile devices. There is an online web based version called Collabora Online.[3]

Mobile

Mobile apps are available for Android, iOS and Chrome OS, they include a text editor (word processor), spreadsheets, presentations and a vector graphics editor. Android apps are for both smartphones and tablets, and Apple apps are available for iPhones and iPads.[4][5] They work online or offline and have touch optimised interfaces for smartphone and tablet screens sizes.[6][7] The mobile app for Chrome OS which runs on Chromebooks and Chromeboxes has a touch optimised interface, it edits documents offline in the Play files folders.[8][9][10]

The mobile apps include the following:

  • Collabora Office Writer - word processor.
  • Collabora Office Calc - spreadsheet editor includes the ability to rotate charts, add a PDF as an image, support for a large portion of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) Macros.
  • Collabora Office Impress - presentation editor.
  • Collabora Office Draw - vector graphics editor for flyers, newsletters, brochures and other works.[11]

The Collabora Office suite of desktop applications run on Windows, macOS and Linux, they include a text editor (word processor), spreadsheets, presentations, vector graphics editor, database and a mathematical and scientific formula editor.[12] The suite works with local storage, network servers and files on cloud and Internet services, the supported cloud servers include Alfresco, FTP servers, Google Drive, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft OneDrive, and WebDAV, it works with services that support the open Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) protocol.[13]

All desktop applications have toolbar options, a customizable tabbed toolbar like Microsoft's ribbon bar and the classic menu bar like Google Docs.[14] They also have a sidebar that appears on the right side providing context relevant quick access to features.[15][16]

Online

There is a web based version called Collabora Online, it is accessible from all modern web browsers without the requirement for plug-ins or add-ons. It allows real time collaboratively editing of text documents, spreadsheets, presentations and vector graphics editing can .[22] Collaborative functions include comments which other users can respond to, document version history enabling the comparison of documents and their restoration, and other things.[23] Collabora Online is integrated with enterprise file synchronisation and sharing cloud solutions such as Nextcloud, ownCloud, Seafile and EGroupware, through these, functions like integrated video calls whilst collaboratively editing documents is possible.[24] The server component of Collabora Online can be purchased through 3rd parties, or you can host your own server on premises of your choice or with a cloud provider, it is possible to run a home server using a Raspberry Pi[25]

File Formats

Collabora Office supports the Open Document Format (odt, ods, odp, odg, odf), the Office Open XML formats (docx, xlsx, pptx) as well as legacy Microsoft Office formats (doc, ppt, xls). Other formats supported include pdf, csv, rtf, and epub. Visio, Publisher, Keynote, Numbers, Quattro Pro, Pages.[26] Legacy formatted documents dating back to the first spreadsheet applications, such as Lotus 1-2-3 can be imported.[27]

Technology

The core of Collabora Office is written in C++ like the core of LibreOffice.

History

The former LibreOffice development team from SUSE joined Collabora in September 2013 forming the subsidiary Collabora Productivity.[28]
