The Stock naming convention distinguishes four chlorates, based on the oxidation state of the chlorine within the oxyanion. The Stock and common names are:
Chlorate(I) = Hypochlorite
Chlorate(III) = Chlorite
Chlorate(V) = Chlorate
Chlorate(VII) = Perchlorate
