Apptainer is a free and open-source computer program that performs operating-system-level virtualization also known as containerization. Unlike other containerization programs such as Docker which strive to be able to run any operating system service, Apptainer focuses on containerizing applications, especially those run on high-performance computing and high-throughput computing systems.
The Apptainer open source project was formerly known as Singularity but changed its name in November 2021 when it joined the Linux Foundation[4]. See the Singularity article for the history. Leadership of the project has transitioned from the original author Gregory Kurtzer to a Technical Steering Committee as specified in the Technical Charter[5].
